The meeting was called to order at 7 17 p.m. by PBC Chairman Kelley with other PBC members Creager(new School Committee-appointed member as well as Design Advisory Committee member), Himmel, Johnson, Poinelli and Touart present. Also attending were Project Manager/Owner's Representative Bill Kealy Director of School Facilities Paul McGonagle, School Superintendent Joanne Benton, School Committee members Tony Close and Tom Griffiths as well as Design Advisory Committee members Eric Brown (also a Fiske parent) John Frey, Sally Harkness, Barbara Hulsizer, Carl Oldenburg, Olga Voronina and Betsy Whitman Others attending included Selectman Dawn McKenna, Capital Expenditures Committee Chairman Tom Griffiths, Fiske Design Advisory Board of the Fiske Site Committee member Aaron Clayton, and other Fiske parents Rich Shembol and Margie Johnson. TLCR architects were represented by Todd Lee and Carol Marsh. Items distributed by TLCR included the following: Agenda Memo/compendium of comments on new Harrington School DD plans and answers. Fiske site plans and most recent revisions incorporating an enlarged gymnasium to accommodate regulation standards and total community use were displayed. Building's angle was slightly shifted to fit setbacks from lot lines. Main parking is in the building's east side, while the playing fields are at the west and front of the building. Bus and parent drop off and pick up would be in the front, facing Adams Street. The main drive to/from Adams Street will be changed to the southern rather than the north side of the site to keep the school's traffic away from the busy intersection with Hathaway Road and East Streets, per Police Department recommendation. The architects also reviewed the history of setting site design concepts beginning at the same time as for the Harrington School. One Fiske parent expressed concern about children's safety and whether enough space for lineup of parents' cars dropping off and picking up children in the new arrangement. Internal space nlans have been reviewed by the school staff prior to the latest changes. Chairman Kelley questioned adequacy of the school's kitchen. Architects notes that they had just learned that the elementary schools would be doing some of their own cooking and not be entirely satellite facilities of the secondary schools for lunches. Style discussion hinged on such terms as `traditional" disciplined' "symmetrical' ordered" "informal", "light' and"somber or dark. No agreement was reached, except that it would be good to have some pictures of precedent buildings and details of buildings. Selectman McKenna emphasized that the entire community must have opportunity to look at the plans, since all will be viewing the school for years to come. Architects agreed. Architects promised some sketches PBC meeting minutes of October 15 2002 -page 2 and pictures but noted that flat drawings of elevations do not truly show appearance. They also promised to bring in some examples of detailing to get a feeling of responses and comments. Other comments and concerns about Fiske nlanning were add-alternate priorities and listings and possible lack of ability to choose which to add at the appropriate time. Questions also arose about how the Fiske schedule would follow the completion of Harrington, depending date when the new Harrington would be ready and the old Harrington would be available as a swing space. Harrington comment list was passed out toward the end of the meeting and a few detail items were displayed such as arrangement of the teaching and cubby areas of a classroom, appearance of the front door A take-apart and look inside model drew considerable attention, especially the platform area connecting the two stair cases leading from the central front hall behind the main entrance to the two classroom pods and how it might be used by the youngsters and by the school program The size and function of the school s kitchen is still in discussion. Meeting adjourned at 9.05 p.m. until Tuesday November 5 Respectfully submitted, Erna S. Greene .J dezto
