Notes from Thursday July 6. 2000 Historic Districts Commission continued hearing on the Cary
Memorial Library Project. (Although also posted by the PBC, this was a meeting of the HDC.)
PBC Members present: Peter Kelley, Philip Poinelli, Mary Lou Touart.
HDC Members sitting Chairman Joann Gschwendtner, Ian Adamson, Jeffrey Denzak, Dan Fenn,
Daniel Griffin and Lynn Hopkins, with Lynne Pease serving as Secretary
Library interest people present included architects Stephen Hale, Tim Heatwole, Carol Mahoney,
and Jackie Davison.
Landscape considerations such as lighting, plant and paving materials and seating arrangements
took up most of the opening discussion. Considerable attention was paid the details around the
Massachusetts Avenue-Clarke Street corner entrance. HDC members responded favorably to
landscaping changes made since the last hearing session. Heatwole emphasized that lighting had
been softened. HDC requested that the plan booklets they had been given at the previous hearing
be amended with the new landscape designs and documentation of materials.
Concluding progress approvals enumerated by HDC Chairman Gschwendtner included the
following:
Porch materials
Bluestone step treads and risers
Exterior colors
Indirect lighting hidden in the porch ceiling
Prairie lantern light fixtures
Entrance doors of three woods
General landscaping plan, with new entryway garden scheme, using Garden-Club-
approved stones
Copper gutters
Questions regarding the interface with the Douglass property were answered, 'Mrs. Douglass has
not presented a plan for her property"
Hearing adjourned at 11:00 p.m. until next continuation, not presently scheduled.
