HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-10-12-COA-min.pdf LEXINGTON COUNCIL ON AGING MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING October 12, 1993 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER Attending: Bob Cushman, Chairman Monica Chang Clark Cowen Ed Grant Barbara Rubin Gene Isotti Linda Crew Vine, Executive Director Dan Fenn, Board of Selectmen Karen Santucci, Social Worker The meeting opened at 4 35 p m with Bob Cushman presiding New member Gene Isotti and Selectman Dan Fenn were introduced The June minutes were approved The September minutes were approved after the deletion of Clark Cowen and Barbara Rubin as attendees and the removal of the next to last sentence of the fourth paragraph The coming year's calendar for committee reports and recommenda- tions from Linda Vine were reviewed It was decided to establish an Ad Hoc Social Service Committee to oversee contracts , fiscal and program operations of the Senior Health Monitor Program, the Social Day Care Program and Cooperative Elder Services Karen Santucci will recruit a retired social worker to serve on this committee with John Curry Regarding a more collaborative relationship with the Recreation Committee, it was decided to wait until the appointment of a new recreation director in January To increase facilitation with the Recreation Committee and the Human Service Committee, it was suggested to have representatives alternate attendance of a monthly meeting--one month we attend their and the next month they attend ours. Karen Santucci, Coordinator, reported on the Senior Health Monitor program With forty-one seniors in the program, it continues to be highly successful A new R N supervisor and LPN have brought a high quality level to operations and care The new brochure will request an increase in co-payments It is encouraging that most new clients are already paying larger amounts Director' s Report 1. With Laurie Gleason's resignation as Meals on Wheels Coordi- nator, this position is open until a replacement is hired Linda shares her concern regarding the stability of Symmes and the hospital 's ability to serve ninety meals per day At •- present, she is exploring alternatives 2 The newly instituted Supper Club Program, sponsored by the COA, Lexington Housing Authority and Minuteman Home Care, opened most successfully at Greeley Village with 47 seniors who were served by middle school students, who also set up and cleaned up The combination of a Wellness Program, dinner and entertainment contributed to the evening ' s enjoy- ment The Supper Club series will continue at the Center, Countryside and Vynebrook Villages 3 . After continual harassment by Muzzey tenant Jeff Corazzini, Linda wrote Rick White, Lexington Town Manager, informing him of the situation Mr Corazzini wrote a letter to the Muzzey Trustees, outlining his complaint that use of the Center by non-residents and non-seniors is resulting in decreased parking spaces for residents Mr Fenn mentioned that the parking lot is for private, as well as public, use 3 To increase linkages with nursing homes, Librarian Anne Novak sent a directive to them informing them of the availability of our book service to shut-ins and our extensive video tape collection 4 . Social Day Care has expanded to a sorely needed four-day operation, beginning October 1st, thus meeting the needs of seniors and their families MMHC has awarded us $6 , 500 to pay for the transportation costs , including the fourth day 5 The Oral History Project, which links Lexington High School students and seniors, will focus on "The Roaring Twenties " 6 Twenty seniors participated at the Core Values meeting held at the Center There is a need to get more seniors into the schools interacting with students of all ages 7 . Brookhaven has extended an open invitation to us 8 Wilson Farms will donate one half of the donations of its Halloween Haunted House to the Center 9 . A grant for a Wellness Program was not approved 10 Jim Nicoloro, President of the Senior Citizens Club, ad- dressed the Council , reviewing the history of the Club in order to enlist our support for his request to Rick White for inclusion in the Recreation Committee ' s budget for $2 , 000 to $3 , 000 for the Club's dinners Bob advised him that we will make Rick White aware of our sentiments The next meeting will be held on November 9 , 1993 The meeting was adjourned at 6 : 10 p m Respectfully submitted, Barbara Rubin
