HomeMy WebLinkAbout1991-03-12-COA-min.pdf 1 COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING - MARCH 12 , 1991 Present Dorothy Boggia , Harriet Onello, Sumner Harris , Beth Klarman, Jim Fenske, Kevin Grimes , Bob Borshay , Jack Eddison (Board of Selectmen liaison) Kristin O' Sullivan ( representing Steve Doran) , and Linda Vine (staff) Meeting was called to order at 4 45 p m Minutes - Harriet Onello read and accepted without correction Remarks - Sumner Harris Appreciation was expressed to staff for the Volunteer Recognition party Director's Report - Linda Vine The following items were presented -Minuteman report projecting aging population -Library Report -Mobile Diagnostic report on Mammogram Screening -Minuteman Home Care memo regarding state budgets cuts Lexington service days will be cut 5-7 days per year -Emerson Gardens (housing information) Linda met with Tom Gouzoule regarding a fact sheet on affordable housing in Lexington Linda will add additional housing options outside Lexington, but in the area ( ie Carleton Willard , The Gables) Jack Eddison inquired about other rental units such as Capt Parker Arms which might be added to the list Beth Klarman inquired about including information on wait list Bob Borshay inquired about the possibility of incorporating this work into publicity for the COA Linda Vine offered Peg Jemison 's consultation to residents of Emerson Gardens ( Jim Fenske suggested a change in the format of the Housing List (regarding the address ) to avoid the impression that the agency address is also a rental location (- Pg 2 -SPANS Dinner Diana Grammont extended invitations to all Board members to attend the March 14th dinner at 6 30 p m at L H S -Middle East Presentation Linda expressed thanks to Jim & Faith Fenske for the program presented at the Center -RFP Bid specifications for the Senior Health Monitor Program will be advertised next week (March 19 , 1991) Goal Setting Discussion - Bob Borshay -Kevin Grimes Congratulations extended to Bob for his synthesis Concern was expressed regarding the PROCESS by which Bob drew up his summary; does it reflect group consensus? Issue What is the mix of Senior Center services/functions with which the group is comfortable? -Linda Vine Concerns expressed Hopes to get a goal that is manageable Looking for avenues to communicate with other community groups How can the Center be seen as providing value to the family; not just the seniors? What educational programs achieve this understanding? Hopes for "ongoing" committee to plan these goals , Wants to by pass national trends that Senior Centers attract only people over 75 wants to attract the "young" old -Beth Klarman Interested in focusing on "sandwich" generation; accredited seminar for professionals Linda commented on developing a skills bank, training program -Jim Fenske Observed a need to collect data and set priorities Where is the money? Set up a X-year plan and a Long Term Planning Committee to establish implementation of components of the Plan (ie communication and education referred to by Linda Vine) Pg 3 -Kevin Grimes Inquired about the "image" issue (Reaching out and networking in community) Great need for leadership on services to create liaison with CAGs COA should be a "clearing house" of available services Is an information managing service a possible fee generator? -Bob Borshay Inquired if "working groups" are set up, won' t the COA need to reach out to others outside of the Board for help? -Kevin Grimes Adverse to "information referral" because it may just be a regurgitation of a computer print out -Dorothy Boggia Suggested targeting ONE idea first Proposal Committees for which board members sign up ad hoc- 1 Education - Beth Klarman , Bob Borshayt„ Harried`) One11q, prothy Boggia ':tea;-t( C"J.s-�Y'n\ 2 Long Term Planning - Ji�^m^ Fenske Kevin/^ �� Gri C - 1 I\(SY.LC J.
