HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-11-08-COA-min.pdf COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING MINUTES - NOVEMBER 8, 1988 Present Susan Nordemo, George Doughty, Wendell Benway, Barbara Rubin, Ed Grant, Ruth Butler, Connie Foster, Kevin Grimes , Jack Eddison Absent Terry Gent, Dorothy Boggia, Louis Tropeano Staff Present Linda Vine, Deborah Bloomberg Others Present Deborah Radway, Assistant to the Town Manager Despite the lack of a quorum, Susan Nordemo, in the absence of Terry Gent and Dorothy Boggia, I called the meeting to order at 4 45 P.M , delaying any decisions until a quorum was reached REMARKS - Susan Nordemo Susan introduced two (2) guests Deborah Radway, Assistant to the Town Manager, and Deborah Bloomberg, new SPANS Coordinator at the C 0 A SECRETARY 'S REPORT - Susan Nordemo The report was accepted as written with one (1) minor correction The number of senior clients in the Senior Health Monitor Program is an estimated number, varying from 20-30 people depending on costs SPANS REPORT - Deborah Bloomberg The Coordinator reviewed the goals and major components of this intergenerational program, which includes a high school credit course which she teaches, the pairing of SPANS students with seniors, and the use of students for volunteer and chore services for seniors Although ! only four (4) students are registered for the course, others from last year's program continue I to serve as volunteers It is hoped that next year this course will be computer listed and offered during the high school day rather than scheduled in the afternoon which conflicts with after school activities DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Linda Vine After showing the Board the new skylight, Linda discussed the upcoming renovations, the - -- glazing and plexiglass , and noted the improvement in the heating situation, thus far Another problem that must be resolved is the Social Day Care Director's office which is musty and mildewed due to leakages Linda has accepted two (2) new roles as 1) a member of the MMHC Advisory Board and 2) a C 0 A regional representative A joint assessment tool for seven (7) collaborating agencies has been developed and will be implemented soon. This will save paperwork as well as the client' s time A questionnaire regarding the C 0.A and its services has been placed in the November C 0.A Newsletter and the Lexington Minute-man So far, the responses have been coming in slowly but they are positive, with major requests for beano Following Linda's mention of a new ad hoc committee on housing comprised of Sherry Edmonds — and representatives from the Hancock Church and other agencies to develop a videotape on accessory apartments, Ed Grant volunteered to assist on this project Upcoming Senior Center activities include 1) A November 28th Open House for area nursing home staffs hosted by Linda Vine and Kevin Grimes, a Board of Health sponsored Flu Shot Clinic at Cary Hall on Thursday, December 1st from 1-4 P.M ; more outreach efforts by Peg Jemison, including the possibility of a Wellness Clinic; an Open House in January for Lexingtonians turning sixty (60) years old MUZZEY TRUSTEE UPDATE - Kevin Grimes ( _ Kevin discussed the roof and drainage repairs that are presently taking place All but three (3) assessments,ranging from $3,500 - $14,000 ,have been paid OTHER Deborah Radway will be meeting every other week with Linda for an update of C 0.A activities and to provide support (OVER) At the next C 0 A Board Meeting Ruth Butler would like to discuss MMIIC, its statement of accomplishments, and measuring its outcomes Connie Foster discussed her new job with ARC of Boston, an addiction Recovery Center for people suffering from drug and alcohol abuse In response to Wendell ' s concern about serving the greatest number of needy seniors through the Senior Health Monitor Program, Linda mentioned that the Friends plan a fund—raising event on APRIL 14, 1989 to support this program Ruth Butler suggested the availability of a scholarship program through the C 0.A for Seniors using the Hayden Recreational facilities This motion was carried and will be advertised in the next C 0 A Newsletter The meeting was adjourned at 6 05 P M The next C 0.A Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13 , 1988 at 4 30 P.M in the Conference Room at the Senior Center Respectfully submitted, Barbara Rubin, Acting Secretary
