HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-05-10-COA-min.pdf COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING MINUTES - May 10, 1988 Present Wendell Benway, Kevin Grimes, Ed Grant, Dorothy Boggia, Connie Foster, Terry Gent, Barbara Rubin, George Doughty, Ruth Butler, Jack Eddison I( absent Louis Tropeano, Susan Nordemo, Roland Greeley (MMHC Rep) Staff Present Suanne Dillman Terry Gent, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 4 32 P.M SECRETARY'S REPORT - Barbara Rubin Following Dorothy Boggia's clarification of Kevin Grimes' meeting report, the minutes of the April 12th Board Meeting were accepted as written NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT - Barbara Rubin, George Doughty The committee presented the following slate of officers for the coming year Chairperson - Terrence Gent Vice-Chairperson - Dorothy Boggia Secretary - Susan Nordemo Treasurer - Wendell Benway After the slate was unanimously approved, George Doughty thanked the current officers for their fine and dedicated efforts this past year SENIOR HEALTH MONITOR PROGRAM UPDATE - Ruth Butler Since the subcommittee has come to an impasse, no meeting was held recently Ruth pinpointed the following areas that need to be defined more clearly before further action can be taken the role of the COA as administrator/case manager of this new program, all the available services currently provided by churches/temples, COA, etc for elders and their families, and preventive education During the lengthy discussion that ensued, Terry explained the relation- ship among the Town of Lexington, the Human Services Committee, VNCH (the health care provider) and the COA, with all the misunderstandings that arose in trying to establish the program with- in this framework Terry identified other issues that also need to be addressed including the forthcoming contract the Town will sign with VNCH this July, as well as the need for the COA Board to review it at its next meeting, the COA's role in expanding services through a medical or social model, and lastly, the lack of a current data base and potential expansion of the serviced population ACTING DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Suanne Dillman After distributing program reports, Suanne announced 1) The birth of Nicholas Crew Vine to overjoyed parents 2) The Spring SPANS Annual Party on May 24th at 2 45 P M. to which Board Members are invited 3) The resignation of Lena (Lee) DeGuglielmo due to health and family reasons 4) Meals on Wheels serving 40 clients with 4 drivers 5) Louis Tropeano 's hospitalization 6) The atrium skylight work that must be placed for public bidding, with an estimated cost of $34,000 _ 7) Louis Tropeano, Terry Gent, Ed Grant , and Wendell Benway indicated they would be interested in being reappointed by the Town Manager to the COA Board Suanne will let this be known to the Town Manager's office ( 8) Discovery Day Alzheimer's Alert Registration and Sign Up Sheet 9)Older American's Month Programs, including the Art Exhibition and the taping of artists for a cable show; Lexington Post Cane Award; a five (5) session Pre-retirement Program; a Mother's Day celebration; etc 10) The ending of Rose Goralnick's internship through Middlesex Community College and the beginning of her paid employment as Suanne' s assistant while Linda Vine is absent from the Center due to a maternity leave -1- 11) The screening of 25 people at the Hearing Clinic on May 9th 12) The well-attended and informative lecture on "Why A Will?" on May 3rd MUZZEY TRUSTEES REPORT - Kevin Grimes The Muzzey Trustees are working to plan appropriate action strategies Another meeting will be scheduled next week ALZHEIMER'S ALERT PROGRAM - Kevin Grimes Letters to nursing homes were mailed and plans are underway for the Alzheimer's Alert Registration on Discovery Day with C O.A Board Members needed to staff the table To publicize this program, Kevin was interviewed by Liz Banks of the Lexington Minute-man and training for appropriate personnel (fire, police) is scheduled for May 19th at the police station This new program is expected to become operational shortly The meeting was adjourned by Terry Gent at 5 50 P M.
