SECRETARY'S REPORT
The minutes of the March meeting were accepted as written
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Terry appointed Barbara and George to serve on this committee and to present a slate of
officers at the May C O.A Board Meeting
TREASURER'S REPORT
Wendell reported that due to increased light and power costs, fourth quarter expenses will
be slightly over budget With reserves building up these increases, plus new mailing costs
of $19 30 per newsletter issue, can be readily absorbed The treasurer's report was accepted
as written
FRIENDS OF THE COUNCIL ON AGING
Sheldon Spector, co-chairperson of the Friends of the C O.A , distributed copies of a new
fund-raising letter which will be mailed to past C 0 A contributors, Town Meeting Members,
members of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, plus non-Chamber businesses Although the
F C O.A. maintains a balance of $27,863 in C 0 D s and $745 in a checking account, it will
initiate an annualfund-raising plan to anticipate both short and long term needs Immediate
top priorities are resurfacing kitchen cabinets, purchase of an overhead projector, outside
picnic tables, and the purchase of new books for staff A discussion of fund-raising activitie
took place with suggestions ranging from matching funds, social activities, and the use of
the C O.A Newsletter which, this year, has elicited minimal response
MUZZEY TRUSTEE REPORT
Kevin Grimes, C O.A liaison to this committee, updated the C O.A. Board on the situation the
condo owners and C 0.A face With an extremely high estimated cost of repairs, the trustees
are seeking assistance from the C O.A. , LEXHAB, and/or the Town to reduce the burden on the
owners Kevin shared information on possible approaches the trustees discussed at its meeting
Avenues that will be explored to remedy the multiple problems of leaks , drainage, asbestos ,
etc are an increase in the present 4% resale cap, the Town to act as co-signer of loans,
and the possibility that the C.O.A. and LEXHAB can put up some money up front Legal action
against those involved in the Muzzey restoration is already being pursued
ALZHEIMER'S ALERT REPORT
Kevin Grimes reported that May 19th will be the date for the training of the fire and police
departments With assistance from Nancy Bartlett, Alzheimer Director of MMHC, Linda and Evy
of the C O.A , and the Visiting Nurse Association, this training will be videotaped for
future use
Suanne Dillman and Kevin will be meeting to plan for Discovery Day on May 28th , an opportune
time for a C O.A display on this program plus other C 0 A. activities, and for registration
of Seniors into this program Dorothy Boggia was requested to help prepare a creative display
and the C 0.A Board urged to staff this table
A page in the June C 0.A Newsletter will feature an article on Alzheimer's Disease and the
Alert Program the C O.A. is instituting with cooperation from the police and fire departments.

SENIOR HEALTH MONITOR REPORT
Susan Nordemo reported that this project is still in the developmental stage In its goal
to promote independent living for Seniors, the committee members Ruth Butler and Susan
Nordemo of the C O.A , Steve Baran and Renee Cochin of the Human Services Committee, conde
to meet to prepare an evaluation form, discuss staffing, establish a fee structure, and
address other pertinent issues It is expected that all will be in readiness by September 1st.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Linda announced that the Newsletter will be put out to bid in the expectation of saving money;
that Meals on Wheels is doing well with 37 clients; and that the library already has available
50 videotapes Coming events are Patriots' Day Parade in April and Older American's Month in
May To honor Lexington's older adults, many special events have been planned, including the
Boston Post Cane Award, honoring an active 80+ Senior, a Senior Art Exhibit, a Pre-Retirement
Series, and a Mother's Day Luncheon
In response to Linda's letter, Representative Stephen Doran promised full support of 1) an
increase in C 0 A. funding, 2) restoration of a separate line item account for C O.A s in
the Elder Affair's budget, and 3) a legislative mandated split of 80-20 between formula and
discretionary funds
OTHER BUSINESS
Dorothy Boggia announced the appointments of Roland Greeley and Wendell Benway as representa-
tives to the Minuteman Home Care Corporation Board
Ed Grant introduced Article 41, a proposed revision to the accessory apartment bylaw, drafted
to increase affordable housing options Following a favorable vote, the C O.A. gave its full
support for this article
The meeting adjourned at 6 05 P.M.
