HomeMy WebLinkAbout1986-12-15-COA-min.pdf COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING - DECEMBER 15, 1986 -he meeting was called to order at 4 36 p.m by President, Dorothy Boggia The following people were present Dorothy Boggia, Linda Vine, Frank Stowell, Jack Eddison, George Doughty, Louis Tropeano, Wendell Benway, Barbara Rubin, Natalie Johnson When the meeting was called to order at 4 36 p.m only 5 Board Members, plus Jack Eddison and Linda Vine, were present which did not constitute a quorum The meeting was adjourned and then called into session without a quorum immediately present REMARKS - Dorothy Boggis Dorothy attended a December 5th Selectmen's Breakfast Meeting where the heating problems of the Center, especially the lounge area, were discussed A 1987 Town Meeting Warrant Article will be written so that monies will be available to address the Center's heating problems The 88% daily utilization of Center room space was made known Jim McLaughlin of the Housing Authority will be meeting with the C Q.A. Board Housing Committee comprised of Dorothy Boggis, Terry Gent, and Gladys Scanlon to exchange ideas and concerns on housing in Lexington Ruth Sawyer was appointed to the Meals on Wheels ad hoc committee comprised of Wendell Benway, Marilyn Campbell, Louis Tropeano, Karen Fullerton, and Linda Vine MINUTES ^orrection of the 11/15/86 Minutes Under the Director's Report section it should be noted :hat accoustical problems do not exist in the dining room, but in the Center downstairs rooms The minutes were accepted with this one correction DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Linda Vine Linda shared with the Board thank you notes she had received pertaining to the December 5th Fashion Show Linda thanked Dorothy Boggia for her hours of hard work on behalf of the Fashion Show Linda passed out a memo dated 12/9/86 and elaborated on the topics she addressed in the memo commodities distribution, the Newsletter printing bid, the nutrition program attendance, the donation response to Bill Sen's Nov C O.A Newsletter article, the status of the computer utilization, and upcoming programs at the Center (S H.I.N E counselors, the small appliance fix it shop, the luncheon for Seniors at the Sheraton) Linda informed the Board of the additional funds requested by the C O.A from the Town for FY 87 for heat, light, and cleaning services Evy Saulich is doing a great job as the SPANS/Outreach Coordinator and Linda wanted the Board to be aware of her efforts Linda passed out Anne Novak's November Library Report Within the next week, two (2) mechanical engineers are being sent down to the C O.A by Mannie Coscia to start investigating the Center's heating problems and to make recoimnend- .ations on what can be done and the costs involved The FY 86 Minuteman Home Care Corporation Report on Elders was passed out This report will be elaborated on at a future time The Gift Shop needs a manager to organize its operations Linda is considering hiring a Senior Aide from MMHCC The Senior Aide Program is a training program and, in this particular case, the Senior Aide would be learning how to run a small business A discussion followed about the appropriateness of using a Senior Aide for managing the Gift Shop paid by MMHCC which has monetary problems If the Gift Shop cannot locate a manager (volunteer or otherwise) and be run better, perhaps consideration will have to be given to closing the Gift Shop Too much of Linda 's time is being utilized to manage the Gift Shop activities FASHION SHOW REPORT The goal of $3,000 should come close to being met People came to the Fashion Show who hadn't been in the Center before An estimate of first time visitors to the Center - 1/3 of the total attendees MINUTEMAN HOME CARE REPORT - Frank Stowell There is a shortage of funds at MMHCC There are problems with the homemakers program; mileage reimbursement being one Joan Butler-West is doing a fine job as the MMHCC director MMHCC (serves 16 towns) is launching a public relations/fundraising campaign MMHCC has its computers up and going Home Care Agencies serve all communities in the Commonwealth MUZZEY CONDO ASSOCIATION REPORT A public phone in a common area of the Muzzey Condos is still being investigated OTHER BUSINESS up Wendell Benway broughtnthe desire on his part for a sign out front on Mass Ave identifying the location of the LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER The sign would have to meet historical standa( The Center's location should be known LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER is preferrable to LEXINGTON COUNCIL ON AGING Should there be a plaque in the Center memorializing Shirley Goodwin? Should there be plaques in the Center memorializing anyone? Should there be plaques in the Center (probably the Conference Room where the C O.A. Board meets) of the C O.A. Boards over the years? Annual Town Reports, C 0 A. Board Minutes, etc will be researched for C O.A Board memberships Perhaps a history of the C O.A from written records, people's memories, scrapbooks, etc can be compiled The meeting was adjourned at 5 31 p m Respectfully submitted, 4,C taiita-,..)
