HomeMy WebLinkAbout1986-10-14-COA-min.pdf Minutes of the Council on Aging October 14 , 1986 1/4 Ir TM, o� r� Lexington Senior Center Council on Aging Present Wendell Benway, Treas , Dorothy Goggia, Chr , Jack Gardner, Ed Grant, Natalie Johnson , Barbara Rubin, Gladys Scanlon , Secy , Lou Tropeano Absent Dr Ralph Freidin , Terry Gent Others Present Jack Eddison, Selectman Liason, Edith Cheever, Frank Stowell, MMHC Reps Staff Linda Crew Vine , Executive Director The meeting was called to order at 4 35 p.m. Chr Boggia announced the appointment of George Doughty to the Council He was unable to be present due to a prior commitment In - House Program Committee Meeting scheduled Jim Wanless tendered his resignation due to health problems ( Motion Edith Cheever serve as our representative Made, Seconded and Passed Jack Gardener expressed the desire to serve as an alternate to the MMHC Jack was appointed as alternate - all consenting Steve Doran submitted the name of Ruth Butler (Capt Parker Arms) as a person who would like to serve in some capacity and we should be in touch with her Terry will give a report on the progress on housing He will give this report at the next Council Meeting Bill Sen spoke on the housing issue Three Committees - thread all groups together Congregate Housing needed Jack Eddison Commented on what has been done (Muzzey and Franklin) --how to get affordable housing for those who need it Grant from state to do a survey of all town land Town has done well by the elderly but more could be done for others Lengthy discussion on housing continued --another Dana Home type ---Town people set up funds to establish such a home:---legal problems---town not qualified to staff ---medical problems ---legal problems Motion Minutes accepted as presented Made, seconded and passed Correction - minor-should read Chairman - not President Treasurer' s Report In good shape 188 Budget question - should maintenance be a separate line item? '88 Budget is tentative. Contract with Kirk Noyes discontinued We will be paying utility bills ourselves Separate account number?? Not reviewed yet with Town Manager who follows this ma C closely Discussion about Condo fee going down - Ed Grant said 05Q. - don' t depend on it--it' s a ball park figure 111 LINDA CREW VINE, Executive Director 44turo.O. 1475 Massachusetts Ave. Lexington,Mass.02173 Telephone(617)661.0194 Motion Treasurer' s Quarterly Report accepted as presented Made, Seconded and passed In regard to expenses - town capped at 4 or 41% we come in with 2 or 21% Health Lecture series overview The first program was taped by Adams Russell There will be 9 or 10 lectures Announcements will be in the Minute Man and the calendar section of the Globe every Thursday Linda discussed her report (copies to each present) Nutrition Program meets 5 days a week; averages 55 people a day Increase of 5 additional people a day Social Day Care meet 3 times a week and averages 12 people a day ----Fuel Assistance Program begins on October 20 and goes through December 31 Library and Meals on Wheels Reports given Painting Exhibit (Lexington Arts and Crafts) being enjoyed at the center Oral Histories Program with play to be performed Linda mentioned the sewer back up at the center ----October 8 Florence Crittenton League Tour - the center was one of the stops There will be an open house on November 14th (3 to 6 p m ) Expect 600 people - Council members asked to serve as escorts and talk about the programs DotBoggia announced that there will be a Fashion Show December 5 (2 to 5 p.m ) Boston Dress Company This is to raise money for Meals on Wheels Tickets probably will be $10 00 Men on Council escorts for models English High Tea still in the formative stage Discussion re Flu shot -- lack of information and publicity Should Board of Health get more vaccine Linda had discussed this subject with Board of Health back in August Discussion re Use of community services to see how we compare to national usage Muzzey Condo Report - Ed Grant said that Joe O' Leary and his wife have assumed custodian roles and things seem to be going well Sewer problem is maintainable. Because of newness problems will come up and Board is learning how deal with them. CoA Sign up Discussion re public telephone needed in the common area permanent benches at the end of the walkway Evie Saulich joined the meeting and distributed copies of her report She works 15 extra hours a week She and Linda attended a meeting at Greeley Village and one is planned at Vynebrook A big need is trans- portation - more services Fridays a bus from Greeley and Vynebrook to the Center LexPress --steps are now lower Discussion re van - Linda suggested that we think long and hard before we do this - problems Evie will sort out information from the Teas and pass needs on to Marilyn It was suggested by Natalie that the meals be presented with a cheery card as they do in parts of New Hampshire ---Consider having a congre- gate meal once a week in the central building at the Villages Work Bench arrived in work shop Edith Cheever announced Senior Speak Out-October 21 (9 a m. to 12 noon) at Heritage Hall Gladys announced she will be attending the Silver Haired Legislature at the State House - November 12 ,13 and 14 She is on the Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee and asked those present if they had any any thoughts on a Bill to be submitted to this session MOTION That the meeting be adjourned at 6 p m.
