HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-05-09-COA-min.pdf COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING, May 9, 1989 Present. . .Dorothy Boggia, Barbara Rubin, John Curry, Lomis Tropeano, Ruth Butler, George Doughty, Jack Eddison, Ed. Grant, Harriet Onello. Absent. . .Connie Foster, Terry Gent Boggia opened the meeting by introducing a new board memoer, Harriet Onello. She then described the previous evenings meeting when the Minute Man Cane was presented to a very surprised Cornelius Cronin. A reception will be held for him at the Senior Center on Thursday, May 12th at 2 30pm. Students at the High School now have an option of 20 hours of social work for credits before graduation instead of or in addition to a subject. Vine explained that Debbie Blumberg was aware of this and had incorporated it into the SPANS program. Vine feels that the COA could make use of this (ie) visiting nursing homes, mowing lawns, etc. Curry wondered if something could be suggested to the school department? Rubin feels the students should have an intro- duction to the proglems of the elderly Secretary. . .A motion was made by Doughty to accept as read the Secretarys report report after two corrections had been made. These were a change from Doughty and Boggia on Nominating commmitte to Doughty and Rubin. Gent, Curry and Boggle will meet with the Town Manager. This was seconded by Curry, passed. Directors .Vine passed out the minutes of the April 5th Board members report meeting regarding State Home Care. One week (May 22 - 29) will not be funded and possibly a week in June also. This amounts to $400.00. We could carry this for a while, we could ask the Friends of the COA. MMHC will put everything except meals. Will see if volunteers will take over. We have enough of them Curry wanted to know if we would pay for May and June Boggia wanted to know if we could use the Selectyens Gift Fund or ask the FCOA? Butler wanted to know if we could be reimoursed from the Senior Health Moniter funds Curry made a motion to ask for help from the Friends of the COA Seconded and passed. Curry then asked what we will do in fiscal 1990? We need a few additional people in the program. Butler wondered about asking for a grant. Rubin said that most places won' t pick up a program. Butler said she had been looking into this Tropeano suggested we ask the Lions Club for money. Vine said they had offered a donation Tropeano knows many of the Lions and will inquire Rubin wondered about Raytheon as they had given money to the Fixit shop. Vine-needs help with the table the COA is having on Discovery Day The` person sighing up at 9 OOam will have to pick up the materials the night before and the person on at 4 OOpm will have to collect everything and return it to the center on Monday. Vine explained that raw sewage is again seeping into the COA and that she had closed the bathrooms, reported to the top officials and called the Fire Dept. SHMS. . Rubin reported that Vine had sent out ten letters to companies doing monitoring asking if they would come to a meeting and show us what they could do for us. Seven showed up for the meetingwith Baran, Vine, Jemison, McLaughlin, and Rubin Jemison knew some of the people and she will do a follow-up. If we select an agency we will want to know all about them and set up guidelines and a committee to report back to us. Eddison asked if these agencies were for profit. They are. John Curry Sec open (this is to oversee paid secretary) Selectmens. Eddison said the newspaper reports are not accurate report regarding housing. There will be two committees by selectmen one committee for Pine Meadow-Meagherville to plan for this site with no Federal or State funds. The other, an affordable Housing option committee doing a perspective of the whole town made up of seven exlisting committees (ie) planning, housin€,etc. one representive from the nine precincts, checking accessory apartments, old schools, etc Does the COA want a liaison person to attend these meetings? Ed Grant volunteered. Butler said she liked the programs in the May newsletter Vine said the program brought in a lot of different people from other towns Butler explained that the EmCo program is made up of retired professors who speak on different subjects Vine said the intern is staying on an extra month and she was glad as this is a great help. Doughty brought up the fact that the elderly who are still in their own homes do not know who to call in a household emergency What could we do to have a list of plubbers, carpenters, etc who would help thea It was suggested that we might ask in the newsletter 1 A motion wes made by Tropeano to adjourn, seconded by Doughty at 5 3Upm Respectfully submitted Ann Quinlan Minutes taker.
