HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-11-25-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Tuesday November 25 1997 Meeting in Room G-15 , Town Office Building, as approved December 16, 1997 The meeting was called to order at 7 12 p m by Chairman Bruckman with other committee members Kelley, Poinelli and Touart , as well as Director of School Building Operation John Moynihan and project manager Fay DeAvignon present Also attending were School Committee Chairman Peltz , Dawn McKenna and Appropriation Committee member Isabel Mroczkowski HMFH was represented by architect Philip Lewis Minutes APPROVED at the beginning and ending of the meeting include those of October 3 , 1997 as submitted and the following as amended October 7 , 14, 21, and 28 , 1997 November 4, 1997 HMFH invoice dated October 31 1997 VOTED by the committee to authorize payment by the town, following a change in its format as requested by Moynihan and DeAvignon Hereafter invoices will be submitted monthly by HMFH showing percents of work completed on various project components A meeting on operating procedures was held recently with HMFH, Moynihan and DeAvignon Information for the committee's December 9 decisions will get to each committee member by the weekend so that the material can be reviewed in advance When plans are generated, three will go to the town, one for DeAvignon one and two to Moynihan and for the record and the other to be available for inspection for committee members and other concerned people Special updated floor plans (only) will go to each Phase I school for feedback Ascertaining specifics in plans is now in progress For example, no kitchen equipment is now in the budget Insofar as possible reuse of present equipment is planned However, the code and the new provider will be checked before the next PBC meeting Moynihan reported contact with Boston Gas on feasibility of service to various school buildings He put them in touch with TMP and they will be meeting with town representatives in about ten days HMFH also would like to participate in these discussions Also they have been talking with the town Engineering/DPW about the location of the sewer line at Diamond A recent meeting at Diamond with Kelley, DeAvignon and Principal Hennessey revealed that a staircase has been moved more to the prin- cipal ' s satisfaction The railing arrangement around the two-story entrance lobby raised no objections Hennessey expressed concern about student traffic in and out of double clustered classroom doors along the new wing hallways The cost per classroom door is about $1200 Committee VOTED that there should be no communication door between classrooms and to proceed with the classroom doors as planned, as their proximity would aid in inter-classroom communication and possible sharing of surveillance A question about the weight-bearing and flexibility of classroom walls was raised with clear-span possibility to allow for future non-school community use of the space, should the school population decrease as it PBC Minutes of 11/25/97 - Page 2 has in the past Lewis had no data on this issue but said it was easily obtainable When the kind of windows planned for the new wing was questioned, Lewis responded that windows would be of the limited-range push-out variety with Andenburg arms A tour of schools where this type of window had been installed was suggested Among those recommended were the Agassiz School in Lincoln, the Brooks Middle School in Carlisle and a school in Somerville A tour proposal will be presented at the next meeting A Diamond elevation drawing was displayed and raised questions about the depth of the entrance canopy (8 ' ) as well as its cost The main entrance will be set in from the building facade and therefore will have a deeper over-cover A Request for Determination has been submitted to the Conservation Commission for determination of the extent of wetlands which must be observed Phasina plan parameters were discussed briefly with DeAvignon and the committee Revised clans for Estabrook (phase II ) were shown The four kindergar- ten rooms are now lined up and a six-foot wide hall now connects the two halls down the sides of the new wing, with very little addition to square footage Meeting adjourned at 9 40 p m , until Tuesday, December 2 , at 7 p m Respectfully submitted, LaiCly �fl�is�� Erna S Greene, Secretary
