Building, as approved October 20 , 1998
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley about 7 40 p m with
other PBC members Bruckman, Cannalonga, Johnson and Poinelli present
Also attending were Director of School Building Operation John Moynihan,
School Committee members Robin DiGiamarino and Martin Long, newly-
appointed Acting School Superintendent Karla Brooks Baehr and Ed Natale
Minutes of Wednesday July 29 1998 were approved as submityted No

Cost preparations for secondary schools nroiect began with distribution
of memos from the schools to HMFH architects and two HMFH memos on their
pricing for the new cost estimates and schematic drawings for revised
high school and middle school plans The total cost for these updating
services would be $53,000; money for these services is still available
from remaining design money
For middle schools , HMFH will prepare lists of possible Phase I and II
cuts or revisions and amounts of money that could be saved by doing
each This would be similar to the lists for the high school that were
subjected to scrutiny by the PBC and ad hoc committees A similar
process is foreseen for the middle schools , with a shortened schedule to
meet time limitations before an expected mid-October special town
meeting and an early December Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion vote
Moynihan reported that HMFH had assured him in telephone conversations
that it would not be necessary to redo design development as there is
already sufficient data (along with new schematic drawings) upon which
to base new cost estimates and construction drawings Poinelli asked
Moynihan to request this statement in writing, i e that the cost
estimates and new schematics "reflect design development work"
Chairman Kelley asked about the time basis for cost estimates Answer
the estimates will be in 1997 dollars , with inflation allowance for
future years
Middle school specifics have been tentatively outlined by Moynihan
Among considerations so far are the possible relocation of all middle
school special education to Diamond and the exploration of varied-sized
classrooms to minimize wall-moving renovations Parity of program and
population between both middle schools is still a School Committee goal
PBC members expressed a strong desire to have architect Phil Lewis
return to the middle school project , as he was on the earlier phases of
the job and relates well to school personnel Moynihan will check with
John Miller on this
Cary Library issues dating back to December 1997 need to be discussed,
especially in light of a belated invoice from the architects for
additional services on plan renovations addressing the initial rejection
of the library ' s application for state funding and Douglass objections
to the plans prior to Board of Appeals hearings Member Poinelli agreed
to discuss with Walter Pierce when he can meet with the PBC
Meeting adjourned at 9 30 p m j ,
Respectfully submitted, e , ✓/F" eic`e Secretary
