HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-06-30-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Tuesday June 30 , 1998 meeting in Room 105, Town Office Building, as approved July 8, 1998 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley at 7 20 p m. with other PBC members Cannalonga, Johnson, Poinelli and Touart present Also attending were Director of School Building Operation John Moynihan and School Committee chairman Peltz, as well as Dawn McKenna Minutes of Wednesday June 3 1998 were approved as submitted with typographic correction Minutes of Tuesday June 16 1998 were approved as amended HMFH Invoice for $15,000 of the $22 ,000 already approved expenditure for possible price cut information was approved for payment by Moynihan in order to comply with the fiscal year deadline that occurred before this meeting PBC assented, and it was noted that another invoice might yet be submitted by the architects Forthcoming three-school Droiect is coming in accordance with the School Committee's decision of June 15 Some review of the discussion at the June 23 Selectmen's meeting and the PBC's relationship with the ad hoc committee ensued The high school project cost is essentially the amount contained in the December project proposal , with some cuts Anticipated that the PBC will be working on the two middle schools through the summer using a process similar to that applied to the high school renovation project The ad hoc committee will probably not be weighing in as formally as they did with the high school Emphasized that the PBC meetings are all open and that all who wish to attend and comment are welcome The next step in setting forth recommendations on the high school , since the PBC and School Committee did not adopt all the cuts recommended by the ad hoc committee, will be a letter addressed to the School Committee, the Selectmen, the ad hoc committee and to the citizens of Lexington via the Lexington Minuteman This letter will be a revised, updated and enriched version of the PBC Chairman's draft report of June 22 to the Selectmen Attached will be the list of suggest cuts annotated with the PBC's acceptance or rejection with brief explanation, justification or reasons The contribution of the ad hoc group's work in bringing about such careful scrutiny will be gratefully acknowledged VOTED that the PBC should send this letter after its wording is approved at the next meeting Additional cost cuts recommended from a lengthy meeting between Moynihan and the high school staff were detailed by Moynihan (1) The Science Lecture Hall need not be demolished or decked (2) A guidance area will be relocated and somewhat scaled down (3) A fourth physical education teaching station with flexibility was determined to be a real need; fitness equipment would be donated Savings would accrue from these two or three economies PBC Minutes 6/30/98 2 (4) In a tour of the parking lots with Peter Chalpin of DPW/Engineering, Moynihan heard that a saving in the $200,000 range could be attained by not rebuilding them but fixing them by crack- sealing and petrol-mat covering This would include no major modification but would include some needed islands for school bus loading areas, curb cuts to Worthen Road and slight modification to accommodate the new support wing Expressing need for accurate cost estimates, Moynihan requested permission to request HMFH for prices to update drawings with all recent changes and possibly obtain a second cost estimate The committee requested Moynihan obtain estimates for this work Middle Schools The issue of site limitations at Clarke and its relationship to Diamond in school population and program was debated briefly The first of two meetings with the principals has already been held with Moynihan, with another meeting to come in the week of July 20 The following week he expects to have a list of suggested cuts ready All inputs from these meetings should be ready for the PBC by early August, he predicted Meeting adjourned at 9 44 p m until Wednesday, July 8 at 7 30 p m Respectfully submitted, Erna S Greene Secretary 1/2
