PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Tuesday June 30 , 1998 meeting in Room 105, Town Office
Building, as approved July 8, 1998
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley at 7 20 p m. with
other PBC members Cannalonga, Johnson, Poinelli and Touart present Also
attending were Director of School Building Operation John Moynihan and
School Committee chairman Peltz, as well as Dawn McKenna
Minutes of Wednesday June 3 1998 were approved as submitted with
typographic correction
Minutes of Tuesday June 16 1998 were approved as amended
HMFH Invoice for $15,000 of the $22 ,000 already approved expenditure for
possible price cut information was approved for payment by Moynihan in
order to comply with the fiscal year deadline that occurred before this
meeting PBC assented, and it was noted that another invoice might yet
be submitted by the architects
Forthcoming three-school Droiect is coming in accordance with the School
Committee's decision of June 15 Some review of the discussion at the
June 23 Selectmen's meeting and the PBC's relationship with the ad hoc
committee ensued The high school project cost is essentially the
amount contained in the December project proposal , with some cuts
Anticipated that the PBC will be working on the two middle schools
through the summer using a process similar to that applied to the high
school renovation project The ad hoc committee will probably not be
weighing in as formally as they did with the high school Emphasized
that the PBC meetings are all open and that all who wish to attend and
comment are welcome
The next step in setting forth recommendations on the high school , since
the PBC and School Committee did not adopt all the cuts recommended by
the ad hoc committee, will be a letter addressed to the School
Committee, the Selectmen, the ad hoc committee and to the citizens of
Lexington via the Lexington Minuteman This letter will be a revised,
updated and enriched version of the PBC Chairman's draft report of June
22 to the Selectmen Attached will be the list of suggest cuts
annotated with the PBC's acceptance or rejection with brief explanation,
justification or reasons The contribution of the ad hoc group's work
in bringing about such careful scrutiny will be gratefully acknowledged
VOTED that the PBC should send this letter after its wording is approved
at the next meeting
Additional cost cuts recommended from a lengthy meeting between Moynihan
and the high school staff were detailed by Moynihan
(1) The Science Lecture Hall need not be demolished or decked
(2) A guidance area will be relocated and somewhat scaled down
(3) A fourth physical education teaching station with flexibility
was determined to be a real need; fitness equipment would be
donated
Savings would accrue from these two or three economies

(4) In a tour of the parking lots with Peter Chalpin of
DPW/Engineering, Moynihan heard that a saving in the $200,000 range
could be attained by not rebuilding them but fixing them by crack-
sealing and petrol-mat covering This would include no major
modification but would include some needed islands for school bus
loading areas, curb cuts to Worthen Road and slight modification to
accommodate the new support wing
Expressing need for accurate cost estimates, Moynihan requested
permission to request HMFH for prices to update drawings with all recent
changes and possibly obtain a second cost estimate The committee
requested Moynihan obtain estimates for this work
Middle Schools The issue of site limitations at Clarke and its
relationship to Diamond in school population and program was debated
briefly The first of two meetings with the principals has already been
held with Moynihan, with another meeting to come in the week of July 20
The following week he expects to have a list of suggested cuts ready
All inputs from these meetings should be ready for the PBC by early
August, he predicted
Meeting adjourned at 9 44 p m until Wednesday, July 8 at 7 30 p m
Respectfully submitted,
Erna S Greene
