HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-06-16-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Tuesday June 16 . 1998 meeting in Room 105, Town Office Building, as approved June 30 , 1998 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley at 7 15 p m with other PBC members Bruckman, Cannalonga, Johnson, Poinelli and Touart present Also attending were Director of School Building Operation John Moynihan, School Committee members Peltz and Rosenberg; Town Meeting Members Alan Lazarus and David Rudner, as well as Capital Expenditures member Charles Hornig School Committee meeting of last nicht was a long one with many decisions made Among them - That the SC supports sprinklers - The curtain wall should be replaced - That the pavement issue be given to the financial committees as well as to DPW to give information on the economics - VOTED bythat the SC project package include all secondary schools, e i both middle schools, with Diamond already combed over carefully, but Clarke still posing site limitations - That there should be only one entrance to the high school on the Worthen Road side near the corner where the staircase is (with the "Athletic entrance" deleted - That the high school library plans should be simplified - The SC would like figures on the combined high school-middle school project by Labor Day, and that as many issues should be closed before financial data is released - The SC also voted to go ahead with revamping plans for the athletic area and not to reduce the presently-planned enlarged science rooms - That the high school library should be built - The SC did not oppose constructing the custodial wing, to serve as support space for the LHS facility PBC comments and decisions on Phase I and II cuts followed Johnson questioned space utilization of the athletic areas SC's decision on a single entrance on Worthen Road side was supported by the PBC Also emphasized that site work should be reduced on the Waltham Street side Poinelli recommended that cores be taken to analyze the base beneath the parking especially if a shim and top coat job is agreed upon Cost data on curbing requested Agreed all around that curb cuts for Worthen Road entrance should be included PBC acknowledged that a cost of $800 ,000 for the 7 ,000 s f maintenance wing may be high, but that the space is certainly needed School PBC Minutes 6/16/98 2 Committee position on the science labs was supported Further clarification on costs for pavement, windows, sprinklers and lights was requested Moynihan explained that he had met with the TMP engineers about lighting and was assured that the 33 percent saving would come mostly from standardization and elimination of soffits Lighting would be parabolic Altogether agreed upon savings would amount to around $2 million in project costs With Phase II cuts the savings would increase to $2 2 million The total high school project cost would be about $28 5 million, about a 10 percent saving from previous estimates, that were based upon 1997 dollars Should the DPW manaae the school buildinas?
