PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Wednesday May 6 1998 -joint meeting of the Permanent
Building Committee and the ad hoc Advisory Committee in the Selectmen' s
Meeting Room, Town Office Building
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kelley at 7 28 p m with the
following present other PBC members Cannalonga, Johnson and Touart and
ad hoc committee members Boyle, Busa, Fenn, Kennedy, LaPointe, Lucas ,
McSweeney and Natale Also present were Director of School Building
Operation John Moynihan; School Committee member Rosenberg, Town Meeting
Members Collier, McKenna and Schroeder as well as Lexington Minuteman
reporter Les Masterson
Moynihan reported that he had met with the architects and received
corrected and refined cost estimates of each of the Phase I and Phase II
suggested cuts The Phase II list was passed around first and
discussion of it lasted until after 10 p m The Phase I sheets were
distributed at the end of the joint meeting for inspection before next
week ' s meeting Moynihan noted that the Phase II data are still being
worked on and may change At the outset of discussion explanation was
requested about what the $100 ,000 that the 1998 Town Meeting had
appropriated would fund Moynihan told that it was for the creation of
two classrooms in what was the industrustrial arts area, as well as a
science storage room and handicapped bathroom in that area
Phase 2A 1 Deleting Athletic Entrance met with some favor if an
entrance at the corner between the athletic wing and the main building
were to be made more significant If this were done, it would still be
possible to close the remainder of the school when an athletic event is
going on
2A, 2 . Reduce Library Addition to one story simple footprint met with
initial favor until it was suggested that there might be a use for
second story space above the library Some exploration would need to be
done if the second story (as well as the first floor curtain wall , which
would be replaced with columns in the library)y) were to be eliminated
Moynihan told that the state guidelines for high school libraries call
for between 8, 500 and 12 ,000 square feet The present LHS library is
8 ,000 s f , and the planned new library, combined with media room, would
be 9,700 s f
2A 3 Do not reconfigure second floor ABC/DEF to enlarae classrooms did
not meet favor because of the small amount of savings that would accrue
from not meeting today' s classroom standards
During the course of discussion Busa emphasized that the ad hoc
committee is committed to producing a report to the School Committee and
PBC Fenn called for more information on the function and reason for
various parts of the school 's plans Moynihan noted that the
cafeteria' s size is driven by the current school standard that calls for
seating 1/3 of the student body at one sitting LaPointe recommended
that the group ask what the town can finance, rather than what the
sticker price of the project would be
In discussing 2A, 4 those present questioned relocating the main school
entrance and how much was needed for safety and traffic easing Worthen
PBC Minutes 5/6/98 2
Road curb cuts and a better way to handle school bus and parental
dropping off was deemed worth leaving in the plan, without radical
changing to the Worthen Road parking lot (resurface, do not rebuild and
landscape) seemed to be the instruction
2B 5 Work on the athletic wing discussion favored gender equity but
drew no conclusions pending a site inspection next week
2C 6 and 7 Relating to demolition of the Science Lecture Hall and
refurbishing of science labs drew considerable discussion about uses of
the space that would be created with demolition of the lecture hall
Some noted that office, storage and project room space only would be
created, but then it was pointed out that space for these functions
would have to be created elsewhere
2C 8 Do not build new Library Addition discussion again brought out
that space would need to be found elsewhere for the library function
Pointed out that the only other space that could be found would involve
bumping the LABS program (for special needs children from Lexington,
Arlington, Belmont, Bedford and Burlington) would have to be found
elsewhere in town so that Lexington could fulfill its financial share of
collaborative responsibilities
2C 9 Do not build the custodial wino addition Moynihan pointed out
that this wing would also contain a system-wide print shop as well as
space for the high school music program so that some of this space would
have to remain while some might happen elsewhere if space could be
found
Revisions to the library and science building were indicated on the
Design Development full set of high school plans , and the group agreed
to meet at the high school to see for themselves at 7 00 p m next
Wednesday, May 13
Ad hoc group adjourned at 10 12 p m , while the PBC remained
Minutes of Wednesday May 28 meeting were APPROVED as amended
Meeting adjourned at 10 23 p m
Respectfully submitted,
!!
