John Frey Bruce Creiger,Steve Hurley, Stacy Bridge, Carl Oldenburg,Karen Bechtel; Eva Heney,Ema Greene,Shirley Stolz, Architects Stephen Hale,Melissa Bennett. I. Design Development Progress: A. Schedule I Currently completing Design Development Phase, about to start Construction Documents to go out to bid in late summer/early fall. 2. Building will be vacated and the Library will move into Cary Hall in late summer. B Site Plan/Zoning Variance comments: I Note By-Law requirement for 71 parking spaces. C. Furnished Floor Plans presented. 1 Handicapped access at Mass.Ave.entry is with ramp, Access at South Entry is with elevator to all floors and ramp to Lower Level. 2. The addition does not project out as far on the South side as the existing garden wall. 3 Design strategy push the stacks into the interior of the plan and give the perimeter back to the patrons. D Sections 1 The building floor plans are very deep, natural light being brought into the interior of the building. E. East and South Elevations, &Model of Reading Bays 1 Existing building materials: 1906-red man-made slate roof, clean up stucco clean up stone base; 1957 - metal standing seam roof, stucco cleaned(or replaced at South elevation where we will be enlarging the existing windows). 2. Addition materials: metal standing seam roof, stucco, and some kind of rough block at the lower level. 3 Question whether addition is starting to look like a different building. Addition is designed to be a good companion rather than a clone of the existing building. Focus is on a good design that will not upstage the original building, especially where they are seen together. Design Development Meeting Minutes 1/29/98 Page 2 4 Blend of old and new colors: stucco tinting possible. Maybe make 3rd level a subtle checkerboard pattern (minimal contrast). 5 Arts and Crafts style: use of lighter(glass) walls appropriate use of materials at bays ("conservatory"style). 6 Old roof replacement is ceramic tile, new roof can be lighter color. Suggestion made to study matching the metal flashing color of the old building with the new roofing. E. South Entry 1 Entry lobby connects to Lower Level by ramp and elevator and stair. Lobby connects to Main Level by stair and elevator, with a fire code-required wall at the Main Level separating the floors. 2. Layering of roof levels in front of what is a vertical space inside -study making entry more vertical at exterior. Would be appropriate to look out at parking from Main Level windows. 2 Entry needs to act as connection from addition to 1957 building on the South side,as does the `tower" from the original building to the addition on the East side. 3 Recreated Mass. Ave. entry is an exterior corner-can be opaque. South Entry is an interior corner-could be much lighter, more transparent, being careful of SW exposure. F Site Plan/Landscape Concerns: 1 Research HC parking layout, is parallel parking allowed? 2. Service entrance to dumpster-is this servicable by a truck? 3 Explore using existing vegetation as well as existing trees. 4 Why formal trees at SW corner at Clarke Street? 5 Chiller location "very disturbing"-could it be relocated into parking area? Fence calls attention to barren area(grate). cc: Library Building Committee and other Attendees Permanent Building Committee Stephen Hale Architect and Associates/Butler Bennett Architects, Inc.
