HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-02-04-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Wednesday February 4 1998 Meeting in Town Office Building, as approved March 26, 1998 The meeting was called to order at 7 37 p m by Chairman Kelley, with other committee members Bruckman, Johnson, Poinelli and Touart attending Also present were Dawn McKenna and School Committee Chairman Barrie Peltz Capital Expenditures Committee member Karen Dooks appeared at the end of the meeting Minutes of Wednesday January 28 1998 were APPROVED as submitted Payment of invoice with attached log sheet from Fay DeAvignon for work during the month of January, 1998 , approval VOTED Report from informal planning group meeting of this afternoon was given by Kelley, Johnson and Peltz who attended A good presentation was j given by high school principal Lanoue, who was generally praised for his performance as a "hands on" principal Concern was expressed about misrepresentations of facts about capital proposals for the schools that have been appearing in the Lexington Minuteman without factual response It was recommended that the committee wait two weeks to find out what or whether the planning group comes forth with a concrete proposal Talking over issues continues in preparation for possible negotiations Those present raised the question of whether policy is actually being made by this group that is not an official town body and does not post notice of its meetings Chairman responded that the meetings are conducted with the door open and that any agreements reached would have to come before official town bodies High School issues of concern - the fact that the high school is presently 100 ,000 square feet short of space and that its library (in which the state requires 12 ,000 square feet) plan obliterates what the chairman terms especially good classrooms - were discussed at some length Members suggested adjusting the plans to improve high school spaces No better location for the library was recommended They commended the principal ' s plan to centralize the school 's records, but questioned the need to have computers and the computer center where it now is The remainder of the meeting, including nearly 15 minutes after formal adjournment , concentrated on possible ways to save money on the proposed high school project Many aspects of planned site work were among suggested cuts , noted on a list of costs dated December 31, 1997 Meeting adjourned at 9 30 p m until February 25 Respectfully submitted, Erna S Greene, Secretary
