HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-01-28-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Wednesday January 28 1998 Meetina in Town Office Building, as approved February 4, 1998 The meeting was called to order at 7 40 p m by Chairman Kelley, with other committee members Johnson, Poinelli and Touart attending, as well as Owner 's Representative Fay DeAvignon Also present were Dawn McKenna; School Committee Chairman Barrie Peltz ; and HMFH architects Philip Lewis and Stephen Friedlaender Capital Expenditures Committee members Karen Dooks, Charles Hornig and Shirley Stolz Minutes of Wednesday January 21 1998 were APPROVED as amended History of plans for the hiah school was reviewed by Friedlaender, using charts compiled from the Masterplan study in March then July, after correction by verification of drawings , and finally with Design Development in December, 1997 During the latter part of design development new peak enrollment figures changing from 1840 pupils to 2100 pupils were reported In extensive conferring with high school Principal Philip Lanoue it was agreed that by keeping rather than enlarging smaller existing classrooms (at lower cost of renovation) the number of general teaching spaces could be boosted from 54 to 72 Lanoue had calculated that 2000 pupils could be fit in that number of spaces, and that the smaller (about 500 square feet) sized classrooms would work because many high school classes are smaller than 22 Some trimming had been done There will be only one language lab instead of the existing two and a smaller area is planned in three technology labs instead of the earlier-planned two Friedlaender assured the committee that the high school is indeed a tightly planned facility, with only 235, 129 square feet of gross space although the state would allow 363, 410 square feet The PBC agreed to use the 2100 students from the most recent reports After the architects departed, high school plans were debated again, particularly about the library, its location and apparent grandiosity Plannina aroup meeting that met this afternoon included Selectmen Busa and McSweeney, Superintendent of Schools Young, John Moynihan, Paul LaPointe of Appropriation, Bill Kennedy of Capital Expenditures , Town Meeting member Neal Boyle, Richard Lucas , School Committee Chairman Peltz , Dave Eagle of the Building Finance Committee, Kelley and Johnson of the PBC, Town Manager White, and Ed Natale It was urged that the reports of the Capital Expenditures and Appropriation committees to the October Special Town Meeting be brought into discussions with this group So far they have recommended that any school-building proposal be less grand, less costly, involve all nine schools and be state reimbursable Cary Library new plans for the addition elevations are being developed for unveiling tomorrow night at the Library Committee's joint meeting with the Design Advisory Committee and PBC These will then go to the Board of Appeals in February, Poinelli reported Meeting adjourned at 10 53 Respectfully submitted, g ,y // ui7,4 Erna S Greene, Secretary F
