PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Tuesday July 15 1997 Meeting in Room G-15 , Town Office
Building, as approved August 19, 1997
The meeting was called to order at 7 37 p m by Chairman Bruckman with
other committee members Johnson and Touart as well as School Committee
Chairman Peltz , SC member Fred Rosenberg and Director of School Building
Operation John Moynihan present Also attending were HMFH representa-
tives Dorthia Hayes, High School Project Manager Arthur Duffy, high
school team member Kurt Yeagan and architect Steve Friedlaender Also
present were Richard Marks of Daedalus , Lexington Minuteman reporter Les
Masterson and Dawn McKenna
Fiske estimates were reviewed with Richard Marks , who noted that cost
estimates for existing conditions are now 75 percent done Fiske
figures are the first completed Both the new school and the existing
conditions estimates are now in systems format In general , he said, he
does not recommend this format for renovation estimates , largely due to
the cumbersome conversion required to convert to estimates by trades
needed for construction drawings If all estimates are in trade (CSI )
format throughout , comparisons between schools would be facilitated He
will talk with Jon Himmel on this
Moynihan y questioned estimates for boiler replacements , telling that his
recent experience has found far higher prices Marks said he would
check his figures with TMP engineers He noted that controls and duct
work were listed separately It was also pointed out that estimates
accompanying the spread sheet surveys of existing conditions do not
include program changes These will be in the schematic cost estimates
Rosenberg asked about the cost of demolition and restoration of terrain
should a new Fiske be built Marks responded that demolition would cost
roughly about $5 a square foot , and restoration of play fields about
$200 ,000 Moynihan asked that the square footage of the existing and
addition at Fiske be pinned down
Ms Hayes asked whether the committee would rather receive all completed
spreadsheets on August 1 or half next week and the rest on August 1
Committee members replied that they would rather tackle the partial load
of data than a large assignment at a later date
Lexington High School plans have already superceded those handed to the
committee last week and are still in progress , Steve Friedlaender
explained from newer plans on display The most significant changes are
the relocation of the main entrance and library, directly across and
behind it The library extends into the courtyard separating the
present J house and computer center The main entrance is presently
planned for the middle of the long window wall connecting the gym/-
auditorium area and the J house wing Access to it and to the large
parking area just outside would be from Worthen Road
Committee members wondered if enclosing interbuilding walkways was
really necessary Plans show enclosed walkways between the main
building and ABC unit building, the Science building and from the
Science building to DEF unit building However, the long walkway
between DEF and ABC would not be enclosed
PBC Minutes of 7/15/97 - Page 2
Rearrangement of administrative offices and student-serving offices
would bring most of these to the area near the new main entrance
Committee members asked about foot traffic crossing the commons area
from DEF to the main building
The science lecture hall would be no more, and the building would house
added science rooms The boiler room in the middle of the building
would remain where it is with new equipment Also gone would be the
locker pods in ABC and DEF buildings It appears that there could be
enough lockers along the long corridors Chairman Peltz expressed a
wish for a larger lower level storage room to house special scenic
effects for the all-night prom party There will be three technology
labs , one of them at the library Relationship of the commons to the
auditorium and to food dispensing areas was noted All in all the
additions to the high school have be tightened to reduce increase in
square footage Generally the high school plans were liked
Harrinaton option D - a two-story addition on the right side was agreed
to ADOPT
Estabrook plan E with a tot lot slot was agreed as the one to ADOPT, as
was the Hastinas addition to the right back side Bridge and Bowman
plans as shown last week were APPROVED
Diamond Middle School classrooms have been reduced to 800 to 850 square
feet Agreed that foreign language classrooms could be even smaller -
about 680 square feet Moynihan requested that a rough elevation
drawing to show roof lines be produced This was promised by the
architects for next week to aid the committee in its decision on a plan
Clarke decision on addition was also deferred to the next meeting
Committee also requested draft project descriptions in terms lay people
could understand (uniformat) A sample prototype school for this
treatment might be Estabrook HMFH personnel departed at 9 58 p m
