PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Wednesday June 25 1997 Meetina at Lexington High School , as
approved July 15, 1997
The meeting wac called to order by Chairman Bruckman at about 7 10 a m ,
with other committee members Johnson, Kelley, and Poinelli present, as
well as Director of School Buildings Operation Moynihan, Paul
Bongiovanni and Dawn McKenna Dorthia Hayes of HMFH attended also,
bringing new draft plans for Bowman, Bridge and Harrington Schools
Bowman plans show an added Kindergarten wing on the right end of the
building Wetlands and wetland buffer zones surround the building on
all other sides Concern was expressed about total square footage of
the addition and how to stay within budget
Bridge school wetland is in the play field Committee suggested that
the kindergartens could be 1100 square feet instead of 1200 and still
meet state standards (and be easier on the budget)
Harrinaton plans show a one-story addition making the total structure a
closed square around an enclosed courtyard connected to the right side
of the present building by a hallway The addition across the back
would contain the early education center and four kindergarten rooms
The courtyard would be visible through the hallway, which would be
glassed on both sides and accessible through doors on opposite sides of
the hallway Committee members suggested exploring variations from
using a two-story addition, and they expressed a liking for the curved
lines shown in the Master Plan draft In any case, they also
recommended exploring a shorter hallway, a pod plan in an angled
addition or other possibilities
Schedule progress reported The Fiske estimates are due at HMFH today
These would be "conceptual cost estimates" not including program
changes Committee members called for schematic cost estimates (within
10 percent accuracy, project descriptions and spread sheets on each
school as well as elevation pictures and schematics by August 15 "We
cannot be late, " it was stated around the room, as pressing the
architects and consultants for prompt delivery was strongly urged The
plans would go to the schools after the PBC signs off on them The PBC
mission for the project is "downward refinement" wherever possible
Bowman, Bridge and Clarke schematics are needed in two weeks
In order that the PBC catch up on its contributions to schedule
expediting, a half hour presentation by Steve Friedlaender on the high
school will be added to the July 1 agenda and an extra meeting was
scheduled for 7 15 a m Thursday, July 3 at Harrington School
In continued delineation of design development interim progress
expectations, the committee called for August 15 delivery of conceptual
cost estimates and schematic designs By September 2 project
descriptions beyond schematics and by September 16 cost estimates should
follow Completion of architectural design development would come
later, with total final approval by the committee and others by December
15 In discussion of who and how payment for a second cost estimate
PBC Minutes of 6/25/97 - Page 2
would come about, the committee would favor use of the forthcoming
project manager 's services for this However, Moynihan pointed out that
the RFP for design development calls for cost estimating as a basic
service The allowance for cost estimating in the contract therefore
would include both parallel estimates
The meeting adjourned at 8 35 a m
Respectfully submitted,
