PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Tuesday June 24 1997 Meeting at Clarke Middle School , as
approved July 15 , 1997
The meeting was called to order at 7 10 p m by Chairman Bruckman, with
committee members Himmel , Johnson, Kelley, Poinelli and Touart present
Also present were Director of School Buildings Operation Moynihan, and
Dawn McKenna Attending from HMFH were Phil Lewis , Dorthia Hayes,
George Metzger and middle schools project director Jayshri Patel
After informing the architects of the committee' s decisions on
explorations needed at Estabrook and Diamond for relocation of planned
additions, the architects presented to the committee their recent
schematics of alternate plans for the middle and some of the elementary
schools
Estabrook Scheme A was much liked by the committee In it the library
would be placed in the leveled-off tiered room, where the high ceilings
would be good for library lighting Recommended the architects go with
this plan, refining and tightening nearby hall spaces before bringing it
back to the committee Scheme B would use the tiered room for the
learning center This scheme grouped the grades in an attractive
manner The committee favored the grouping of kindergarten rooms at the
end of the wing, where they might have separate entrance and drop-off
area
Diamond scheme A would place a large classroom out from the
administrative area Plan B would put a tier of classrooms behind the
gym and add to the library into the courtyard Committee asked if this
scheme would require addition of an elevator HMFH said they would look
at the back of the building where the committee had recommended
exploration of an addition and they might also consider adding to the
other side from the cafeteria
Clarke scheme A showed a two-story addition on the top side of the
building Scheme B showed a narrower and longer addition to the same
side Scheme C called for a three story addition that would be to the
right angled out from the main entrance area Favored by both architect
Lewis and the committee, it would require some relocation of the bus
turn around at the main entrance All schemes could involve addition of
a fourth level and possible new elevator Scheme C would have to be
shoehorned into the site
The architects left at 9 10 p m , with Ms Hayes promising to appear at
tomorrow morning's meeting to show draft schematics for Harrington,
Bowman and Bridge
Schedule and Swing Space Assuming building a new school , a schedule
could be set up to (1) build the new school (2) then add to Diamond and
Clarke and (3) start the high school in two years The old Fiske could
be the swing space At Harrington and Hastings the additions plus small
renovations could be done in one summer Moynihan is looking into
possible available space to rent at Hanscom and elsewhere In order to
decide upon the feasibility of building a new school , the cost estimates
of Fiske renovations and new school must be ascertained

Contract is to be for the total design development with milestones such
as September 1 for all data required for a town meeting The School
Committee expects cost estimates , plans and elevation pictures as well
as a laundry list of what is to be done to each school (Poinelli has
given Steve Friedlaender CPM and values specifications as well as
project description specifications that can be incorporated into the
architects ' presentations )
Minutes of June 19 1997 were APPROVED as amended
