PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Thursday June 19 1997 Meetina at Diamond Middle School , as
approved June 24, 1997
The meeting was called to order at 7 10 p m by Chairman Bruckman, with
committee members Himmel , Johnson, Kelley, Poinelli and Touart present
Dawn McKenna also attended
The meeting began with a brief discussion on where and how 22 rooms ,
including one science room and expanded library space might be added A
quick review of current traffic patterns and the draft master plan
revealed the inadvisability of adding to the school where the buses now
unload near the back entrance by the glass-walled hallway
Then the group went on an extensive look-see tour of the building and
grounds They looked at the cafeteria that is four or five steps up
from the level of the rest of the school (and reached by a special
handicapped lift) Also toured were the gymnasium, library and the
nearby courtyard, as well parts of the building's perimeter The idea
of adding a second floor to parts of the school currently one-story was
not pursued when Poinelli expressed doubt that the site and structure
could support a second floor in one-story areas After a thorough look-
around, the committee concluded that the library might best be built as
sketched in the draft plan In addition MOVED that HMFH explore moving
the four room addition across from the library (on the west side) to the
south side between the music room and cafeteria, where the site goes
uphill Peter Johnson agreed to go over the site plan regarding this
In later discussion the committee called for more options to be
presented Suggested A design Charrette and talking design with HMFH,
with reasons for and against each design option to be explained by both
the architect and committee Overall creativity was advocated The
design work might be broken up into several projects such as one for the
high school , one for both middle schools and two or three projects
encompassing the elementary schools
The document presented by Poinelli at the June 12 informal meeting was
considered an excellent basis for pricing and scope It was deemed
especially good for its technical specificity For Lexington there
could be at least three or as many as nine such documents, with
considerable boilerplate verbiage in common to all
A time line of expectations was called for, using "preferred schematics"
as bases for cost estimates
Plans for future committee meetinas Chairman Bruckman will not be
present for the June 30 Selectmen's meeting (Peter Kelley agreed to
attend) and the July 1 School Committee-PBC meeting
Minutes of June 10 1997 meetina were APPROVED as amended
Minutes of June 17 1997 meeting were APPROVED as amended
The meeting adjourned at 9 52 p m
Respectfully submitted, i` Secretary
