HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-06-19-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Thursday June 19 1997 Meetina at Diamond Middle School , as approved June 24, 1997 The meeting was called to order at 7 10 p m by Chairman Bruckman, with committee members Himmel , Johnson, Kelley, Poinelli and Touart present Dawn McKenna also attended The meeting began with a brief discussion on where and how 22 rooms , including one science room and expanded library space might be added A quick review of current traffic patterns and the draft master plan revealed the inadvisability of adding to the school where the buses now unload near the back entrance by the glass-walled hallway Then the group went on an extensive look-see tour of the building and grounds They looked at the cafeteria that is four or five steps up from the level of the rest of the school (and reached by a special handicapped lift) Also toured were the gymnasium, library and the nearby courtyard, as well parts of the building's perimeter The idea of adding a second floor to parts of the school currently one-story was not pursued when Poinelli expressed doubt that the site and structure could support a second floor in one-story areas After a thorough look- around, the committee concluded that the library might best be built as sketched in the draft plan In addition MOVED that HMFH explore moving the four room addition across from the library (on the west side) to the south side between the music room and cafeteria, where the site goes uphill Peter Johnson agreed to go over the site plan regarding this In later discussion the committee called for more options to be presented Suggested A design Charrette and talking design with HMFH, with reasons for and against each design option to be explained by both the architect and committee Overall creativity was advocated The design work might be broken up into several projects such as one for the high school , one for both middle schools and two or three projects encompassing the elementary schools The document presented by Poinelli at the June 12 informal meeting was considered an excellent basis for pricing and scope It was deemed especially good for its technical specificity For Lexington there could be at least three or as many as nine such documents, with considerable boilerplate verbiage in common to all A time line of expectations was called for, using "preferred schematics" as bases for cost estimates Plans for future committee meetinas Chairman Bruckman will not be present for the June 30 Selectmen's meeting (Peter Kelley agreed to attend) and the July 1 School Committee-PBC meeting Minutes of June 10 1997 meetina were APPROVED as amended Minutes of June 17 1997 meeting were APPROVED as amended The meeting adjourned at 9 52 p m Respectfully submitted, �i`� Secretary
