PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Tuesday June 17 1997 Meetina at Estabrook School , as
approved June 1997
The meeting began with a tour of the school about 7 30 p m Attending
were Chairman Bruckman, Johnson, Kelley, and Touart of the PBC, as well
as School Committee Chairman Peltz Also present were Director of
School Buildings Operation Moynihan, Paul Bongiovanni , Roger Gurney and
Dawn McKenna
Among the rooms visited during the tour were the rooms (originally one)
with the risers, the hallway coat hanging areas , the wing with some new
1,000 square foot rooms added in 1989, the temporary classroom wing, an
example of tutoring stations in a closet, kitchen and entry courtyard,
with its mural and adjoining tutoring rooms , also added in 1989 The
group also eyeballed the bluestone-paved courtyard opening directly
behind the central hallway (behind the mural )
When reassembled in the present library, the committee was told by
Moynihan that closing in the entry way could save as many as six to
eight planned classroom additions and save a considerable amount
Emphasized that HMFH needs direction about space conversions and where
to put additions in consonance with the proposed site plan With
imaginations at work, the committee envisioned the entryway for a
library that would best show the function of the building as well as the
mural A computer room might be carved from some of the courtyard
across the hall and behind VOTED do direct HMFH to utilize entry and
rear courtyard space to minimize enlargement of the building footprint
In additional discussion the committee recommended moving existing walls
only when absolutely necessary Deemed that the ampitheatre concrete
risers would have to be leveled since they are not handicapped
accessible The remaining area would be quite suitable for art and
music plus related storage The need for full 1200 square foot
kindergartens (4 of them) must be addressed If these are not added,
walls must be moved to create them Bruckman asked Moynihan to revisit
this issue with Jim Anderson of the School Building Assistance Board
Moynihan pointed out that the site plan featured a widening of the entry
roadway and the addition of 28 parking spaces , as well as an improved
traffic pattern
Site Problems at other schools have been documented by Sorenson of
Johnson landscape architects Wetland limitations exist at Bowman,
Clarke and the high school Dorthia Hayes is now sketching a two-story
addition on back side of Clarke The high school parking areas cannot
expanded but may be improved
Proiect manager applicants, whose deadline for applying is tomorrow, now
number 38, Moynihan reported Fifty percent are from very small firms
and 15 percent are from individuals , he noted It is anticipated a
project manager should be on board in July

about fire protection and suppression
Last niaht ' s Selectmen' s meetina was attended and reported on by
Bruckman, who is now attending their meetings every two weeks

how much of the school cost is program-related According to state
requirements, the building program must fulfill school committee policy
