PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Notes from Thursday June 12 1997 workina discussion in Room G-15, Town
Office Building
The meeting began shortly after 7 30 p m with committee members Kelley,
Johnson and Poinelli present
Poinelli distributed copies of a uniformat project description for
design development specifications by system This is capable of serving
as basis for design It promotes good understanding of materials This
particular document ( for a middle school in Norton) has been done for
new construction and covers the entire building and all of its systems
Poinelli said he has been in contact with John Miller, who also wants
the document, but first the PBC members should see and discuss it
After Johnson express concern about the PBC' s responsibility for
planning so much in so short a time, the group discussed various aspects
of schedule and expectations with some of the following concluded
(1) Inventories of existing conditions are valuable but these need to be
more specific How much of what? (but Poinelli cautioned about the
possibility of a patched look is replacements are partial )
( 2) Basically the problem is to accommodate growing school population
(3) Final package of information on the project must be ready by
September 10
(4) Design must be community understandable
(5) Basic final work must be done by September 1, then the PBC must make
decisions quickly
( 6) A walk through each building is needed
(7 ) Analyses of needs of each building must be run through with numbers
A project boss could help bring this together
(8) For Town Meeting vote design development need not be completed, but
design development should be finished in order to go on
( 9) Good communication with HMFH is essential Suggested that the
architects appear at the Tuesday night meetings and that the committee
meet at an additional time Friday early morning was recommended
(10 ) Estabrook may not need as much addition if the entry space and the
music room with the concrete risers are reclaimed The entry could
become the cafeteria, and the music room leveled and made to accommodate
the library (the risers pose an ADA problem if they remain)
(11) Elementary schools should be renovated at a cost of no more than
$100 to $115 per square foot
