John Moynihan outlined the project scope and schedule with the key points being an April
town meeting vote to fund the first stage of the design, an override to fund the final
design/construction/renovation in the fall of 1997, and start of construction sometime after
the Spring of 1998. We then talked about specific issues concerning the design of the
Clarke School. The specific issues mentioned were:
1 IMC should not change. Do not add walls/barriers. Do not take space for computer lab.
The IMC space is the heart/soul of the school and should continue to be so. The large open
space is essential to this function.
2. IMC needs computers for intemet access, etc. These computers are part of the library
function and are additional to computers in computer labs, writing labs, CADD labs, etc.
3 Teacher work area should be contiguous, located adjacent to the IMC and of sufficient
size (as it is now). Shrinking the work area with the assumption that work area will be
gained back with project rooms is not a good assumption.
4 In general the concept of project rooms and their use did not seem to be well
understood. The idea that these rooms could be used differently to reduce teacher traveling
was raised. It was also pointed out that unattended rooms i.e. rooms that are not also a
teachers home can raise security and supervisory issues.
5 Did not like the new addition. Too many nooks/crannies/isolated areas. Elevator too far
away
6. Need addition parking and better traffic flow
