John Moynihan outlined the project scope and schedule with the key points being an April
town meeting vote to fund the first stage of the design, an override to fund the final
design/construction/renovation in the fall of 1997, and start of construction sometime after
the Spring of 1998. We then talked about specific issues concerning the design of the
Hastings School. The specific issues mentioned were:
1 Need basketball courts. Must replace court that is lost at end of building and there is a
real need for another court. There is not enough paved playground space. Walls for
bouncing balls off of are needed.
2. Parking is inadequate for staff and parents.
3 Need visual contact between office and health suite since supervision of the health suite
is done by office personnel as well as the part-time nurse.
4. Need visual contact between main office and main entrance for security
5 Keep aides work area adjacent to office. Aides work in the office as well as the
classroom.
6. Would like moveable walls and/or interconnects between classrooms.
7 Consider possibility for courtyard as a learning space.
8. Bus dropoff area should be adjacent/close to office.
9 One story addition is isolated, does not have bathrooms, or a good place for coats, etc.
10. Added space should probably include additional bathrooms.
11 Back corner downstairs lacks locker space.
12. Do not put music room adjacent to learning center.
13 HV units need replaced in all rooms.
14. Sinks in classrooms probably need replaced.
15 Lextended day does not have dedicated space. Sharing space with Kindergarten or
the cafeteria is not as easy as it sounds. This is an ongoing problem. Lextended day may
need to find alternative space not located at Hastings.
