PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of Tuesday June 27 2006 meeting in the meeting room at Cary Memorial Library
Permanent Building Committee Vice-Chairman,Jon Himmel called the meeting to order at 7:09
p.m.with other PBC member Bruce Creager present. Also in attendance, Carl Valente,
Lexington Town Manager,Bill Hadley,DPW Director,Wayne Brooks,Manager of Operations
and Pauline Burke from the DPW Connie Rawson,Library Director,HK T architects,Janet
Slemenda and Michael Lawrence and Duke Bitsko,Bio Engineering Group,Michael Hairs,
Gannett Flemming,Jeff Alberti,Weston& Sampson,Lexington Selectmen,Jeane Krieger and
Richard Pagett,Harvey Bingham,Lexington Bike Advisory Committee,Ted Edson,Capital
Expenditures,John Frey, Tree Committee,DAG and BAC,Alan Levine,Appropriations
Committee, and Lexington Residents,Arman Devian,Arthur Lindsay,Dave Eagle,Edward
Cheng,Nancy Devenney,Brett Devenney and Dennis Stevzin.
1.HKT architect J. Slemenda.with drawings.discussed the current DPW facility and the
proposed new situated DPW facility that will be constructed.
2.Drawings depicted traffic movement around the buildings and through buildings. loading of
sand and salt at the sand/salt shed,new personnel areas,how the School Department Facilitie's
office and DPW offices now at Town Hall will be integrated into the new building plans,public
and private areas,parking,visual screening,exterior lighting and the entrance to the bike path.
3 A bio-retention system will be used to clean surface water before it reaches the road.
( 4.Attendees were invited to ask questions following J. Slemenda's talk.
5 Keening the fueling island in its same location was an issue of concern. J Slemenda explained
that the fueling island is shown in the same area because of the different types of vehicles that
would be refueling there and the location is also farther away from the stream.
6. The subiect of screening using evergreens rather than fencing or high barriers near the bike
path and abutters was brought up.M. Lawrence responded by saying that the area adjacent to the
Knights of Columbus,where the salt/sand shed will be built,will be graded down 16 feet with a
screen.
7 Whether one entrance and exit to the site is sufficient and the circulation of traffic through the
complex was viewed as possible future problems.
8. When asked if a geo-thermal system would be used.J. Slemenda answered.yes.and added that
sustainable design is being considered wherever possible, for example,reusing water to wash
DPW vehicles.
9 Cut off lighting will be used on the exterior of the building to accommodate evening activity
that could increase with the use of added community space within the new facility
10.Bathroom facilities for bike oath users especially on weekends. is still be worked out.
11.Mother community meeting will be scheduled before the next TM meeting in late September.
12. The meeting ended at 8:02 p.m.
