HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-01-28-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of Tuesday January 28 1997 Meeting in Room G-15 , Town Office Building, as approved February 4, 1997 The meeting was called by Chairman Bruckman at 7 35 p m with other committee members Johnson, McCabe, Poinelli and Touart present Also present were School Committee member Susan Elberger and Director of School Buildings Operation John Moynihan as well as Dawn McKenna Town Report draft was informally approved as edited by Mary Lou Touart Chairman Bruckman briefly reviewed Saturday, January 21 discussion Ten fewer classrooms are recommended for elementary schools due to downward revision to peak enrollment projections HMFH is now working to complete integration of existing SPED spaces into Learning Centers Middle Schools dilemma of the class size given as 22 rather than 25 is still being examined Moynihan consulted Joanne Hennessey extensively by phone and together they determined that in year 2001 scheduling there would be 87 percent utilization of classrooms , with the exception of those for electives and specialized use A clarification of recommended class size was sought , but there seemed to be no agreement Elberger reported that the School Committee had voted that class size should be held to present levels Teachers ' contractual limit (a figure that the schools would go to only if had to) is 27 A class size averaging the SC voted level should be basis of school design, it was stated Concern was expressed, especially by McKenna and McCabe, that planning this way might be too tight if projections for years five to ten were too low It costs about $150 ,000 to build a classroom according to Moynihan, and cleaning and normal maintenance would cost about $3 42 per square foot Doing simple raw scheduling figures, it looked as if 36 of the 45 classrooms would be occupied at all times Chairman expressed concern that 160 square feet per student planning must be justified Poinelli told the committee the state SBAB is usually flexible on such matters Generally asked to meet next time with both middle school principals Room sizing should be a minimum of 900 s f for new construction, with the maximum allowance of 1050 s f Agreed among those present that library space of 5200 was appropriate With report that 1300 s f of currently-used SPED spaces could be reclaimed at Bowman (example first school for which this has been calculated) , committee agreed that 2 ,000 s f for each learning center would be good High School plans were reviewed quickly New construction is shown for print shop, custodial room, teachers ' lounge and purchasing/warehouse operation space Poinelli , who has assembled information on the site of each school , observed need for site work including a fire lane around s the building(s) A better entry sense generally recognized as a real need for the high school , possibly in the area near where the new addition is sketched Meeting adjourned at 9 25 p m Respectfully submitted, L., 4a a4-2.- Erna S Greene, Secretary ',
