HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-06-05-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of June 5 1996 Meeting in Room 111 , Town Office Building, as approved December 16, 1997 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bruckman at 7 47 p m with other committee members Edson, McCabe, Scanlon and Touart present Also present were Joseph Dini , new representative of the School Committee as well as John Moynihan Director of School Buildings Operation Harrington School plans are not out for roof , including water and ice shields , flashing and galvanized leaders In addition, the drainage system needs renewing Old plans for the building were found There is no venting for walls up to the roof New dormers in the plans will provide ventilation A vent will be installed in each dormer and its ridge New metal frames and doors will be supplied, with the old wood to go out Trim will be cream and doors will highlight entrances with dark green There is a 30 percent allowance for fixing inoperable windows , and John Moynihan is to determine which ones ($450 ,000 for replacing the windows was taken out of the contract) Harrington was built in 1956 and additions were constructed in 1961 and 1966 Its lies on the largest school site is in town - 27 acres - except for the high school In the 1960s the heating system was converted to a hot water system Plans were to convert the hot water boiler to dual fuel Now there is a deal available with the gas company for gas to be the primary fuel There also will be two gas hot water heaters Architect Doris Cole has been 0 K to work with Plans went out to bid today, and already four calls have been received Filed subbids for electrical work are due June 20 , with general contractors ' bids due July 5 The job is supposed to be done by September 1, and the boilers part of the work by September 15 Asbestos has already been abated, except possibly the fire box in the furnace Archetype' s estimate of $125 per window (for replacement) was utterly insufficient The price is closer to $414 Moynihan explained that he is not using Archetype for job costing In some instances they even were wrong on square footage At Diamond Middle School conversion of the industrial arts room into classrooms will soon be underway The space measures 104 x 105 feet and will be for small special needs and other programs Bradley of Lexington is doing the plans A home economics room will become a classroom and a large computer lab The sewing room will become classrooms and the sheet metal shop is to become a computer lab At Bridge and Bowman partitions will be moved Lots of shifting will be done at Clarke Middle School , and the high school is moving and creating spaces There no doubt will be "many homeless people" among the staff There will be no more changes until after the space utilization study is completed, except for one A reconfiguration of A-House is to be done by the LABB program for $40 ,000 LABS parents have purchased the paint The RFP for the space study of the high school and other secondary schools will go to the committee at the outset Committee members asked PBC Minutes of 6/5/96 - Page 2 how the new study (to cost between $40 ,000 and $80 ,000) will differ from the work of Archetype Moynihan responded that the study will be an analysis of each building and how it should serve the program and anticipated enrollment A total of 987 , 000 square feet will be included in the study Edson questioned the scope of the study Committee members commented that the high school is too scattered Both program and space changes are envisioned Asked who would work with the study personnel Moynihan said that the latest in system and equipment would be requested - State of the Art , in other words Many meetings with teachers will be planned A good contractor is to be sought Networking and telecommunications with an electric work filed subbid request for proposals is going out Each building is to have a server In the elementary schools there will be five computer drops per classroom; in the middle schools three and in the high school two The system would be functional and expandible Work would be done in August and during school vacations PBC members Bruckman, McCabe and Touart will review the proposals about July 10 About 10 to 12 proposals are anticipated Minutes of March 20 1996 committee meeting were APPROVED as corrected Committee membership Jim Scanlon announced that he must resign from the committee because he is moving to Bedford This is the last committee meeting he will be attending Meeting adjourned at 9 15 p m Respectfully submitted, L /0/42-4–e-- Erna 0/42-4–e—Erna S Greene, Secretary {
