HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-04-25-PBC-min.pdf 1 TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of April 25 1995 Meeting in Room 105, Town Office Building, as approved January 24, 1996 The meeting was called to order by Chairman pro tem McCabe at 8 23 p m with other committee members Bruckman, Edson, and Touart present Also present Library Director Carol Mahoney, who announced that Walter Pierce, Chairman of the Library Building Committee, who had just been appointed earlier that day as Library trustees ' representative to the PBC on the library renovation Carol Mahoney told the committee that this library renovation project will involve redesign to bring the library into the 21st century as well as to correct current problems Free consulting services are available from Lexington resident and building committee member Jay Lucker, director of all MIT libraries, who will be retiring in August Mahoney reviewed the library's building history The latest renovation was in 1975, and the building plans are all on file at the library Since that time the library ' s collection has grown to 220 ,000 books and library technology has exploded The ramp entry is an echo chamber and does not meet current ADA standards The public service areas need to work better and be thoroughly user friendly New plans must also meet growing school populations and be in consonance with long-range plans Heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems all need upgrading, a very old boiler makes nearby areas most unpleasant places to work The library hopes to receive about 50 percent reimbursement from the second installment of a library improvement appropriation and will use all available assistance in-house as well as from the Board of Library Commissioners, who are available as consultants to work with the town on acquiring all necessary permits from the Historic Districts Commission and other town agencies Many factors are in the library' s favor, among them the very high library usage and circulation (second only to Boston's) Enthusiasm of town boards was noted The committee suggested a few amendments to the draft form for Central Registry Notice for Designer Services that had been prepared by the Library Planning Committee A fee of $40 ,000 is specified Only some details on mechanics need to be ironed out with the town staff who deal with these matters , so that the notice can be published as soon as possible Minutes of March 22 1995 both open and executive session were APPROVED as submitted Meeting adjourned at 9 08 p m Respectfully submitted, Erna S Greene Secretary
