PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of August 25 1888 tour of Lexington High School and meeting in
the principal ' s office that followed as approved January 12 , 1989
The tour began shortly after 3 30 p m near the entrance of the school
Attending were the following committee members Chairman Kennedy
Edson Scanlon and Touart staff Principal Wilson Assistant Principal
Anthony Capezza Clerk-of-the-Works Coscia and Superintendent Geiger
consultant Rowlands ; School Committee Polly Woodworth; Enablement
Committee Robert Harris and Joanne Fray; and reporter Lisa Redmond
Viewed first were the lobby and auditorium (seatless) Estimated that
the auditorium would be done approximately November 1 , including
painting All except wall installations such as telephones and display
cases will be done in the lobby Delivery of new front inner and outer
doors is awaited If necessary these will he installed after 3 p m
during school Exterior doors will be wood and interior ones aluminum
with heavy guage pressed metal frames Lights in the lobby may not have
frames and covers but the fi.ctures will be there Floor will be
"fritz marbelized ceramic washable tiles A new principal ' s office
door is now being fabricated The air conditioner in the office area
will be relocated and replaced
As the group proceded toward the staircase on which the wheelchair lift
will be installed Ms Fray asked about the fire alarms in each room
would be both visual and audible in case a deaf student would be alone
in a classroom Answer Both visual and audible alarms would be in the
halls ; only audible alarms are being installed in classrooms According
to code all classroom numbers will be raised for the blind
At the staircase where the wheelchair lift will be installed Harris and
Fray asked if projecting rails were to be installed on the staircases
(for partially disabled/frail users) The answer was that existing
rails were not being changed as it was understood they met code The
group exited the nearby door Harris pointed out that a wheelchair ramp
should be installed just outside this exit (Because existing
wheelchair ramps were either inconveniently placed or coveied with piles
of building materials Harris found getting around circuitous at first
and then impossible )
The group crossed over to the DEF unit building to see the elevator
shaft pass-through hallways on the first and second floors and
registrar ' s office where a new roll down door will be installed cher the
counter Units ABC will have similar elevator and pass-through halls
In the Science Building the committee inspected a classroom one of the
28 where new coountertops and cabinets will be installed By the end of
September all classrooms will be done, with chemistry and physics rooms
to be done first There will be some delay for utitilies turn-on The
plumber is working six days a wee',

Gathered outside the group considered what had to be done for the
opening of school and what work will be done after school is in session
For example the old file alarm system is still in place and working
and will be until the new system is fully installed and tested Clerk- j
of-the-works stated that cleaning would not be a major problem School
custodians would be able to start cleaning by mid-next-week
Superintendent Geiger declared he would not consider deliying school
opening He would rather come up with alternative locations for
classes such as Cary Hall Classes will not be disturbed by such
incomplete areas as floors of concrete instead of finish material Work
areas such as the high school auditorium will be sealed off Although
the roof is still a problem the field house will be finished soon after
school begins Adams Russell is now rewiring the school for cable TV
Among the unfinished areas in other schools will be the darkroom at
Clarke Estabrook library (bathrooms are nearly done) and librarie.; at
Fiske and Harrington (where tutorial areas will be ready) New window
installation will include cleaning of the windows All rubbish and
equipment will be taken away from the outsides of schools At the high
school the new dust collecting system will be done in the shop area by
next Tuesday Exteriors of schools will be finished during the fall
The group met briefly in the high school principal ' s office to receive
consultants ' reports and set the next meeting for Thursday September 3 ,
at 7 30 p m
The meeting adjourned at about 5 20 p m
