PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of July 28 1988 meeting in Room G-15 Town Office Building
as approved January 12 1989
The meeting was called to order by Chairman pro tem Edson at 7 42 p m
He presided until arrival of Charman Kennedy All committee members
attended Also present were Superintendent of Schools Geiger Clerk cf
the Works Coscia and consultant Aitchison of Chartwell
Copies of TAMS contract with the town were given members of the
subcommittee dealing with architects request for more money
Field House Roof report by David Adler of Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger has
been received and now the committee needs legal guidance on how to
proceed According to the report insulation below the roof had been
removed with the old roof hut not replaced Among other problems
decking over old skylight areas was installed lower than surrounding
roof This is obvious from the outside In addition carpentry
underneath these areas was not done correctly Condensation and leaks
continue
Cost of all reroofing at the high school was $375 000 Legal action
will be invoking the guarantee and going after Briggs for malpractice as
the removal and installation procedures they recommended have produceu a
roof not meeting code Other damages to be sought will involve addi-
tional cost to clean up the wetness and possibly safety issues The
newspaper has been informed of the roof problem Prior to court action
the committee will consult the town' s attorney to decide on direction
and consult Briggs who is supposed to be the town' s agent on this
Morello will also be contacted Although litigation is anticipated
avenues of negotiation and arbitration will he explored first
Schedules and Finances of Work (graphs) were distributed by the
consultant Although the contract runs through January it is expected
that the Diamond Middle School contractor will be done by the end of
November Financial tables now show $677 , 000 left but probably all but
$275 000 is already spent Among anticipated expenses $60 000 for
extra asbestos removal and unspecified amounts for moving utilities from
elevator shafts in the high school and at Harrington
Various Questions were brought up by Superintendent Geiger as a result
of his tours through Lhe schools Could Fiske be painted? Coscia said
flashings should be repaired beforehand Ms Touart pleaded for
interior design consultation on colors Caulking and repointing is now
being done at the high school Noted that lift similar to the one
planned for the high school can be seen in the Belmont Town Hall and at
the Toronto Airport Master clock at the high school is to be connect-
ed with all clocks A new clock and wiring system has been installed
High School Intercom lack of room-to-central-office communication again
discussed Asked if Sesco could letiofit the system that is now
installed (hopefully on the console rather than with rewiring to every
speaker) Noted that school personnel did not know that the system was

being replaced Amtech is working on the problem
hi.an School Front Doors are to be aluminum replacing heavy steel doors
The new door frames will be steel Superintendent questioned durability
of the new installation
Science Building supplies are being expedited If new counter covers do
not arrive plywood tops will be installed Involved are 28 classrooms
Demolition starts next week Ten to 12 classrooms are to be done each
week all should be done by September 18th on this swchedule All
materials have been ordered Principal Wilson has requested that all
agreements on delivery and completion of this work be put in writing
Planning for Cleanup before opening of schools was urged by Aitchison

Preparations and Signage for Voting August 17 at Schools Under
Construction was reviewed School principals and Town Manager will make
necessary arrangements
Superintendent said that the school system can live with the planned
completion schedule Meetings were scheduled for August 11 and 25 The
August 25 gathering will be at 3 30 p m Lour beginning at the high
school and including Harrington
Meeting adjourned at 9 40 p m
