HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-05-28-PBC-min.pdf TOWN OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PERMANENT BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of May 28. 1987 meeting at Le. ington Hugh School Science Lecture Hall as approved June 11 1987 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Kennedy at the conclusion of a brief public information meeting on plans for the rennovation of the high school (Attending the earlier meeting were two reporters, a music teacher three TAMS representatives, those listed below and NO member of the general public. ) Attending the committee meeting were members Edson, Smith and Touart as well as John Kennedy who arrived later; School Committee member Wik; Selectman McSweeney; staff Maclnnes and Coscia and consultants Rowlands and Aitchison of Chartwell General Bids for Package No. 2 were reviewed Although six contractors requested documents, only two submitted bids and neither of these was 100 percent complete VOTED to accept the base bid only from Seaman Bratko Corp and then look at the alternates, analyzing work to be done in the field house under the third bid package Concern was expressed that the bid amount is about $72 000 above budget estimate, since the replacement of the basketball floor was pulled out of the general bid package Of the base bid nearly $150 000 is for painting work, especially in the high school Alternate 1 the gym floor could be rejected and rebid since it needs to be done only before basketball season Asbestos Abatement Report received today from Briggs recommends $177,000 worth of work to be done on Bridge and Bowman schools. This is nearly three times what the budget says; use of contingency funds may be required. Briggs said that 60 percent reimbursement might be claimed from the EPA. They anticipate that the work will be done during the summer of 1987 VOTED that specifications be prepared for Bridge and Bowman asbestos abatement work for bidding in the near future and due July 1. Reroofing the Field House is in progress with Morello, using shingle and a hip roof pattern Problems encountered include rotting roof planks and dropping ceiling tiles Recommended that TAMS be consulted about how the hexagonal structures in the openings will be closed 1 Procedure for Chance Orders VOTED to authorize Aitchison to approve change orders up to $10,000 that do not extend the scope of work Clerk of Works Emanuele Coscia was recommended He is thinking about it When questioned about possible assistants, he recommended a neighbor of his Other assistance may be available through the consultants. A glazing rebid has resulted in reduction of amount from $50,000 to $37,000 Maclnness asked for a schedule of work so that teachers in the affected classrooms can pack up their effects and books. Noted that getting the job done is Aitchison's job He should identify problem areas and facilitate solutions.
