HomeMy WebLinkAbout1978-09-13-COA-min.pdf ig COUNCIL ON AGING P 0 Box 636 Lexington, MA 02173 MINUTES OFMEETING ON SEPTEMBER 13, 1978 5-0-729 r294156, - - - Present Ch W Sen, Treas J Carlson, Sec D Williams S Clark, F Cooper, C Miller Staff - J Melcher Observer Barbara Luckman Guests Students from Boston College Absent V Ch R Weinstein, S Goodwin, A Jackson The meeting was called to order at 7 30 p m MOTION Moved, seconded, and unanimously approved the Minutes of the Meeting held July 12 (No meeting held in August) J Carlson presented a Treasurer' s Report "Bills Submitted to Town for Payment - FY 1979 * MOTION Moved, seconded, and unanimously approved the Treasurer's Report Ch Sen INTRODUCED STUDENTS from Boston College They are doing a needs assessment for the Town, and a report will be made New CoA Center Ch Sen reported on the opening of the new CoA Center at the Church of Our Redeemer This involved a Ribbon-Cutting a month after the Center opened The attendance at this ceremony was around 200 people The Town is now expecting us to use this Center as a "Test Bed " Congregate Meals In answer to a question concerning Congregate Meals at the Center, it was stated that they cannot be held at our present site Lexington people are going to Bedford or Arlington Heights for their Congregate Meals Winchester, through their Council of Churches, gives a luncheon once a month for seniors Ch Sen sent a letter to SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT LAWSON and received one in return, indicating cooperation He went to the Superintendent's Office and discussed programs He then worked with High School Principal Clune for two days at the School with the idea of having six students work with the Council It appears that 20 students have signed up They could work on Meals on Wheels and Friendly Visitors programs Margaret John is the person heading up the work It was suggested that perhaps one or two might be interested in working with senior citizen clubs This program will be coordinated by Sylvia Merfeld, Ann Paranya, and dOVS MOPIV% O myp4 s t' SW nm GVPI Im / Lexington Council on Aging Minutes of Meeting on Sept 13, 1978 meeting Rivka Rassel An orientation and information^is to be held for them on September 26 at 3 p m where people from the various groups involved in the CoA will be introduced Hospitality Nook There is a need for a hospitality nook, but the question arises as to where it can go This could include a couple of easy chairs, some books and magazines Step at Front Door A problem arises as to the step from driveway to walk and from bottom of ramp to door at entrance to the Center MOTION Moved, seconded, and unanimously approved that the CoA put white marks (or stripes) on steps and install a ramp if possible Ch Sen stated that he would take care of this Ch Sen reported on a Breakfast Meeting he attended in the Selectmen's Room There is a need for lateral coordination between boards and com- mittees in town It was stated by Ch Sen that there is a need for more help in the CoA Office An attempt is being made to replace Nedra Shulkin, our former CETA worker Coordinator's Report Joan Melcher gave the enclosed report She also reported that a suggestion had been made that the CoA sell 1 things senior citizens make - and receive a percentage of the sale There are people wanting to do this - again, where to put such a table? j Home Care Roy Weinstein has been nominated to be an Alternate on the-- n 191 Home Care Corporation, replacing i+asvcs Stt Li. 4) Brown rye& )yi ioJ' Advisory Group F Cooper reported that there is no need to continue the "former" idea of an advisory group as such to the Council as Win Friedman in the Human Services Committee through Nancy Banks is doing the job Our volunteers are more or less making up a "Friends of the Council" group J Melcher reported that a Christmas Tea would be held again this year for our volunteers Information Packet C Miller suggested that an Information Packet be compiled to give to people called upon, which would give literature from many organizations in Town It would only mean a mailing cost in some cases, plus the cost of a jacket Should the Service Directory be updated? Information put in the Lexington telephone book? MOTION Moved, seconded, and unanimously approved that during the coming year we compile an information packet which the Council on Aging will give out as they see fit C Miller, D Williams, and J Melcher will start this project Entertainment Committee (Changed from CoA Recreation Committee) Barbara Luckman reported on the activities of the Committee Many programs are being planned - notices of events are in the CoA Newsletter Presidents of Organizations say there is a fund to help people go on these trips (How do people know of these funds?) Lexington Council on Aging Minutes of Meeting on Sept 13, 1978 Annual Report This report will soon be due and will be about 3/4 page A small group is needed to start drafting this report, including statistics J Melcher and D Williams will begin work on this - Roy Weinstein, V Ch , is responsible for this report Other Business The Town Transportation Committee is attempting to get a grant Middlesex Community is planning a Job Bank - for Lexington, Worburn, and Arlington This Bank will match elders to jobs Ch Sen passed out a Preliminary Budget for FY ' 80, to be used for working purposes MOTION Moved, seconded, and unanimously approved that the Council adjourn at 9 p m F Cooper then reported that she could not be at meetings at 7 30 p m and other members were finding it difficult It was decided to try an 8 p m meeting time in October .c' ase n, Dorothy B Williams Secretary Enc Coordinator' s Report Meals-on-Wheels July and August Reports Senior Aide' s Report for July and August i'. i e
