HomeMy WebLinkAbout1977-04-13-COA-min.pdf Lexington Council on Aging Meeting, April 13, 1977 Visitors ' Center, Second-floor Meeting Room— MINUTES Present CoA S Goodwin, A.Jackson, A Paranya, M Ritter, J Stumpp, D Williams Staff J Meicher Observers B,Weiss (LWV) , W Sen 1 The meeting was called to order at 8 05 P M by Ch Jane Stumpp Minutes of the March 9th meeting were approved as distributed, 2 The Co-ordinator reported as follows a The office is handling an increasing amount of information and referral work b Update on trips 89 people went to the Flower Show; bus cost was X94 84 25 people have signed up for Suffolk Downs ; one bus will be needed Three busses will be needed for the Newport trip on May 18th Future trips planned include Provincetown by boat in June; Where' s Boston and Sky Walk in September Longer trips being offered by Colpitts Maine Lobster Bake , August 10, for 3 days; Nova Scotia, one week, beginning July 21 ; week' s cruise, late November, aboard QE2 c Play reading group has held one session with a very favorable re- sponse by participants Next meeting scheduled for April 17th to read "The Flattering Word" by George Kelly d. Bermuda trip (Colpitts - 34 people went) was very successful ; people want to go again with Claire Dean e Swimming is getting very popular About 25 people go quite reg- ularly and car pools seem to be getting organized f The grocery shopping program is very helpful , though there are only 3 regular customers However, Pam Carvey thinks it should continue g Transportation 54 people used the bus in March, including 9. trips for the legally blind lady, for whom CoA paid $5 50 in fares However, she has been notified. that we cannot continue to pay her fare h Bowling at Burlington was not very successful as people wanted candle pin, not ten pin lessons The alley will try to set up candle pin lessons in the fall i Bill Page has donated the book Prolongevity to the CoA library a thank-you note has been sent J Newsletter Jan White and Joy Sen are taking over the Newsletter, which will go to press May 2nd, and be mailed about May 9th Any news items for this issue should be at the office as soon as pos- sible k Meals-on-Wheels Sylvia has worked hard visiting clients and training volunteers There are now 11 clients , with inquiries coming in daily A coffee hour for the volunteers on April 13th provided an extra training session and a chance to to meet the Council members Edna Anderson will do Meals-on-Wheels bookkeep- ing 1 Lend-a-Hand Society of First Parish donated $132 50 to pay for thermal containers for Meals-on-Wheels Pilgrim Circle of Pilgrim Congregational Church has given $50 for our special fund m I have prepared a manilla envelope containing pertinent letters and articles received between Council meetings , for CoA members to read to keep up to date on CoA activities n I attended a Human Services Executive Board Meeting two weeks ago with Marge Battin, Ed Maclean, Jackie Davidson, and Jeff Shaw The Board is looking for a management type person to chair the Human Services Committee Jane Stumpp will report on the second meeting of the entire committee o Anne Scigliano has agreed to put a CoA calendar in the Minute-Man each month 3 The Treasurer listed the following bills To A Paranya (playreading group expense) 3 51 Meals-on-Wheels (coffee & mileage expenses) 8 61 C&W Trans ( blind passenger's fares) 5 50 To S Murfeld ( supplies for M-on-W program) 19 76 To M Ritter (Postage due) 2 21 To J.Melcher (tips for bus drivers) 10 00 Telephone 57 73 To M-M Vocatioal (Meals-on-Wheels signs) 9 00 C&W Trans (Flower Show trip) 94 84 It was moved, seconded, and voted to pay these bills , totaling $176.88 It was moved, seconded, and voted to approve an expenditure of approx- imately 170 for reprints of Discount Booklets It was moved, seconded, and voted to reimburse Joan Melcher for her expenses on bus trips 4. The Treasurer also presented a statement showing CoA expenditures to date , estimated expenditures for the rest of F77, and estimated totals., Comptroller ledger balance on CoA account on 3/31/77 was $4, 332 81 , of which $2 , 353 is earmarked for regular, estimated expenses, leaving a balance of approximately $1 ,979 81 It was moved, seconded, and voted to reimburse Dr Sylvia Murfeld $158 for her mileage expended in organizing and working on Meals-on-Wheels 1 ,300 miles @ 12¢ per mile It was moved, seconded, and voted that Dr Sylvia Murfeld be paid for her services as Meals-On-Wheels Co-ordinator at a rate of $4 per hour, 20 hours per week, during May and June , a total of 1720, contingent upon the approval of the Town Manager It was moved, seconded, and voted that the Treasurer be empowered to pay telephone bills as routine business expense without specific approval each month by the Council 5 Dot Williams reported that Bernice Weiss was doing a research paper on funding and would share with the CoA any helpful information she discovered Bernice briefly explained her ideas to the Council 6. The next meeting of the CoA will be held on Wednesday, May 11 , 1977. The evaluation studies of CoA programs , proposed by Ann Jackson, will be discussed, 7 The meeting was adjourned at approximately 10 P M. Respectfully submitted, Ann G. Paranya Secretary
