The meeting was called to order at 7 45 P M by Ch. Jane Stumpp Minutes for the meeting of September 22 were approved as distributed 2 Lynn Hamilton reported on the Recreation Department' s recent survey to ascertain Lexington's needs and priorities in recreation This survey will form the basis for a five-year plan for recreation ex- penditures, and will be used to support budget requests The town' s second priority, as revealed by the survey, is for a community center for mixed age groups, and the committee will work toward establishing such a center as soon as possible The department plans to initiate new programs in anticipation of getting space. Ms Hamilton stressed the need for co-ordination of efforts to pro- vide recreation for everyone The needs of the elderly are not neces- sarily expensive for example, croquet, shuffle-bosrd, Bingo, and sing-a-longs on a regular basis It was agreed that there should be co-operation between the CoA and the Recreation Dept and that the CoA appoint a representative to the Community Center Advisory Com- mittee 3 Mr Godsoe, Asst to the Minister at Grace Chapel , is in charge of elderly affairs at the Chapel Mr Godsoe outlined plans to use facilities at the Old Belfry Club as a center for the elderly several days a week. The Club is centrally located, has facilities such as bowling alleys, ping pong, kitchens, and is available for use now Grace Chapel can provide a manager for the Center at least two days a week They do not need public money, but welcome input from the CoA and help in publicizing the Center The only restrictions on the use of the Center Mould be prohibitions against dancing, drinking, gambling, and smoking Card playing as entertainment would be per- mitted Discussion led to the idea that the Center might be used as a drop- off, pick-up point in conjunction with the Council ' s mini-bus pro- gram which will opwrate on Mondays, Wednesdays , and Fridays begin- ning Nov 15 The consensus was that this should be tried The CoA will provide supplies for coffee, etc for bus patrons 4 Mrs Stumpp reported that a first draft reporting the CoA's activi- ties for the Town Report is due by Nov 12 The Council is scheduled to meet with the Selectmen on Monday, October 18 Mrs Stumpp has told the Selectmen that it is essential that Mr Melbye be present at that meeting She stressed the point that we must deal with the facts and circulate copies of the correspondence sent to the Senior Citizens Club 5 Mrs Williams outlined plans for the CoA Forum to be held on Sunday, November 7, from 2-5 P M at Cary Hall In addition to brief talks explaining the functions and accomplishments of the CoA, there will be simple refreshments , and it was suggested that the H S Madrigal Group be asked to perform Formal invitations will be issued to the Town Manager, the Selectmen Chairmen of Town Boards and Town Groups The meeting will be open to all residents 6 Treasurer' s Report Mrs Ritter presented the following outstandins bills ; Office supplies , Xeroxing X1l 6 55 Postage Due charges Busses for Foliage Trip 288 00 P 0 Deposit for Newsletter 250. 00 It was moved, seconded, and voted that these bills be approved. It was moved, seconded, and voted that the Treasurer be authorized to submit the bill for the Co-ordinator' s salary to the Comptroller routinely each month. 7 Co-ordinator' s report a Swimming schedule at M-MVTS has been set up and started as of September 22 b Mini-bus transportation program will begin on Nov 15 Bus will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays , and, at first , will go to Lexington Center only. Twelve men volunteers will be needed to man the busses, to help passengers on and off, carry bundles c About 900 ID cards have been issued d, Friendly Visitors have held their first meeting with Rivka Gruber, social worker from MVMHC, Second session will be held this Friday. e The Foliage Trip, held today, was pleasant , seemed successful , and produced no problems. f Scott Plumb, Co-ordinator for Arlington CoA, willmeet with me tomorrow to discuss Meals-on Wheels g. The committee from FISH and Stevens Market to plan for grocery deliveries held another meeting It was decided to start the program after January 1 There will be a meeting with the presi- dents of Greeley and Vynebrooke Villages for input before plans are finalized. 8. Mrs Williams reported that Newsletter #4 had gone to press and should be ready for mailing in about two weeks. 9 Mrs Gould, treasurer of the former Committee on Aging has asked what she should do with money (about $200) remainong in the treasury It was suggested that the doners of the money, First Parish Lend-a- Hand and the Baptist Women' s Group be contacted for their ideas 10 Next meeting, October 27.
