HomeMy WebLinkAbout1976-09-22-COA-min.pdf Lexington Council on Aging Meeting, September 22 , 1976 Visitors ' center, Second-floor Meeting Room MINUTES Present CoA A Jackson, A Paranya, M Ritter, J.Rooney, J Stumpp, D.Williams, S,Goodwin 1 The meeting was called to order at 7 50 P M by Ch Jane Stumpp After noting a correction on page 2 to the effect that Home Care expenses should be $2 ,428 00, the minutes for the September 8 meet- ing were approved as distributed 2 Mrs Williams reported that application for a non-profitbulk mail- ing permit was not completed, since it seemed obvious that the CoA is not eligible under present rules 3 Mrs Stumpp reported on a conversation with Mr R Michelson regard- ing CoA use of the Visitors ' Center, which she felt resulted in a more amicable relationship 4 Ann Jackson's delightful report on her trip to Greeley Village to issue ID cards was shared with the Council 5 Co-ordinator's Report was read, as follows a. The FISH Board is interested in the grocery delivery idea. Sandys Samarian will work on arrangements with Mark Stevens , with Joan as advisor b. Mr.William Godsoe of Grace Chapel came to talk about activities for senior citizens Grace Chapel plans to use the Old Belfry Club three or four days a week for senior citizens There are ex- cellent facilities, with few steps, crafts room, bowling, pool, and ping pong; weekday use only Mr Godsoe was invited to talk to the Council ; may do so at a later date. c Joan Short of West Virginia came to ask about our Discount Pro- gram as she is starting a similar one in Norton, W Va. d. Georgia Hale, Los Angeles social worker interested in working with the elderly, is looking for a part-time job or volunteer work Referred to Jon Pynoos at Minute-Man Home Care Corp e Mrs A Buckley, referred to CoA by Sancta Maria Hospital, needs 5 main meals the week of Sept 19th, FISH was contacted; they will take care of her and check also for the next week f No further news from Ted Rose at Vocational re swimming program in spite of frequent calls to him g Several small items have been sent to the MINUTE-MAN for the CoA Corner h. Robert Grant Allen represented CoA (Joan) at a Lexington Health Dept meeting, Tues. Sept 21 about swine flu. Tentative date set'- for flu clinic is Oct 21st i Dorothy Murphy can get new, almost up-to-date weekly magazines through her husband's office. Arrangements have been made to place some at both Villages, possibly to the Dana Home j. CoA has been asked to take discount cards to the Nursing Homes k. A call to Episcopal Theological School has resulted in finding a young couple, Mr and Mrs Begay, to live with Mr Clifford Muzzey 1 Arrangements complete for MBTA Pass Day at Cary Hall on Sept 28th m. The CoA office (staffed by Joan) will be open on Saturday, Oct 2 from 9 - 12noon n 60 reservations for the Foliage Trip have been made so far o More than 450 ID cards for the Discount Program have been issued to date, 6. Dor by Williams is still working on release forms for the foliage t p. 7. t was moved, seconded, and voted that Joan Melcher, CoA co-ordinator, be paid for the eleven hours of overtime that still remain to her credit after deducting the hours for her philadelphia trip 8. A question was raised about people who can't get to the Coa office be- tween 9 and 1 o'clock. Should volunteers be asked to staff the office in the afternoon? Consensus was that CoA office hours should not be changed or extended, but that special appointments might be made in appropriate cases 9. The question of additional help for the CoA was again raised Could the Town Manager appoint a special sub-committee to work with the Council? 10 Mr. Rooney suggested that a special effort to call attention to CoA accomplishments be made in the January newsletter 11 Question raised Can someone (not eligible for the discount) shop for an eligible , but disabled, relative? Ann Jackson suggested using a per- mission form good for a limited period only It was finally moved, seconded, and voted that any decision be postponed pending further in- vestigation. 12 So far, 72 persons have signed up for the foliage trip This raises the possibility that only 2 busses will be needed for the trip. 13. .Mrs. Williams mentioned requests coming in for daytime classes. There is need for someone to work on this 14. It was agreed that the Council should hold a special meeting - an open forum - to explain objectives and accomplishments of the CoA Tentative date suggested November 7th. 15 163 replies to the brief transportation questionnaire have been filled out so far, Main destinations requested are Lexington Center, Burlington Mall and Burlington Arcade. . . The sub-committee is ready to meet with C&W Transportation. Shirley Goodwin will investigate the Arlington transportation program. 16 The Treasurer reported outstanding bills of Telephone $67. 31 Ingalls -- Xeroxing and office supplies 15.44 It was moved, seconded, and voted to authorize payment of these bills Mrs Ritter read a letter regarding making deposits for postage on items like returned questionnaires The Council swa no need for this ; will expect individuals to affix their own postage to such items in the future 17 Lynne Hamilton of the Recreation Dept wants to talk to the CoA about recreation for the elderly She will be invited to the next meeting. 18 Next CoA meeting will be on Oct. 13th.
