Meeting, August 25, 1976 Visitors L,enuer, cecona-floor Meeting Room MINUTES Present CoA A.Jackson, A Paranya, M Ritter, J Rooney, J Stumpp, D Williams Staff J,Melcher Guests D Eagles , T,Sorrenti Observer A,Scigliano 1 The meeting was called to order at 7 40 P M by Ch Jane Stumpp Minutes for the meeting of August 10,1976 were approved as distrib- uted. 2. The Transportation Sub-Committee reported that they had met and had had some further discussion on the problems. Most popular destina- tions for seniors who have responded are Lexington Center and the Burlington Mall. A swim program at M-M Vocational is not imminent, will probably not be scheduled until after 2330 P.M and cannot be tied in with the proposed meals program. Transportation for swim- ming will be a separate problem. With Mr. Eagles and Mr,Sorrenti the Council discussed many aspects of the problem. First need is to know how many people will be in- volved Costs willrun $18-20 for a mini-bus (for 4 hours) , about $30 for a large bus , $25 (approx. ) for a wheel-chair van. Publicity will be needed, and it was agreed that flyers to each senior citizen would be the best way to publicize. The program will not start until after the publicity has gone out Possible date , Oct, l5th Volunteers will be needed to ride the busses to assist passengers Set route vs. Dial-a-ride was discussed and the tentative decision reached was to start with definite routes The program will operate on three days Monday, Wednesday, and Friday The town will be div- ided into 3 areas, one area being served each day Other questions raised included 1) setting definite places to pick up passengers (especially on return trips) 2) Combining Lexington Center with Mall stops , 3)using the special van for taking disabled seniors to meetings or special events. Mr Eagles pointed out that any publicity will have to mention the trial aspect of the program; also, that any plan, route, etc will have to have some flexibility built in It was agreed that the Sub-Committee on Transportation will draw up firm plans and than get in touch with Mr Eagles Any publicity will follow checking with C&W 3 The Treasurer reported the following bills and charges outstanding To D Williams (Xeroxing, office supplies, etc $10 18 Telephone ( incl. installation of 2nd phone) 109 73 Newsletter #3 (M-MVTHS) 75 00 To Ingalls (Xeroxing, stationery) 12. 09 Co-ordinator's salary (August) 308 00 It was moved, seconded, and voted that these bills be approved for payment 4 Report of Joan Melcher, CoA Co-ordinator a. Transportation Sub-Committee met at the CoA office on Augustl4th, Report given by D Williams Letter written to Mr. David Eagles. b. Share-a-crop no news after first time at each village. Mrs. Gramont is away and will probably report when she returns at the end of the week. (Word is that vegetables have been brought in, and picked up, each week ) c Meeting with Friendly Visitor Chairman, Chris Moore who proposes a research booklet for Friendly Visitors to help them answer questions asked by visitees Later, a more complete booklet might be prepared to be given to all senior citizens (preferably before Town Meeting) . Friendly Visitor letters have been mailed. So far the response has not been overwhelming d The Lexington Minute-Man has been approached about a bi-weekly col- umn for the senior citizen. Anne Scigliano thought it possible. e Contacted Ted Rose regarding swimming at M-M Vocational. Situation does not sound too promising Classes are held daily at the school until 2 30, so co-ordinating swimming and lunch may not be feasible f. Newsletter #3 is ready to go, but when? The minute it goes out we are going to need the ID cards and Discount Booklets. Have contacted Town Hall about Xeroxing 500 booklets for a start Jeff Shaw will check this. This seems the fastest way to do it, and more could be Xeroxed when needed. The booklet cuold be cut and stapled there too. g. A sign-up sheet is available for Council members to volunteer to issue ID cards at clinics and drop-in centers h. Should local banks be contacted to see if any or all would be willing to set some time aside each month to counsel senior citizens in finan- cial matters such as wills , trusts, investments? This would be on a private basis (If the co-ordinator enlists volunteer lawyers , CPA's, how can she be sure their information and advice is reliable and up- to-date?) (Mixed reaction to this proposal ; need more information; we might investigate service recently started in Arlington ) 5 Mrs. Williams reported that ID cards will be reedy on Friday. Discount booklets should be ready for distribution with the cards Discussion on best way to reproduce the booklets was inconclusive 6 Foliage Trip ---- Question Should there be any further publicity after the Newsletter comes out? Ann Jackson mentioned the possible use of radio spot publicity; also the need for a monitor on each bus to check passengers and handle possible emergencies 7. Mrs Paranya reported briefly on the Workshop on Aging conducted by Counseling Collaborativeand turned over to Joan Melcher notes on the material covered 8. Anne Scigliano suggested using the telephone recorder to announce in- formation about bus trips, Newsletters, and other Council Activities. 9, The next meeting, on September 8th, will be concerned with the Discount Program and progress of the Transportation Program. Jane Tapia, Dir- ector of Tri-Community Health Services will be invited to attend 10 The meeting was adjourned at 9 10 P M Respectfully submitted, Ann G Paranya Secretary
