Human Services Committee
5/24/00
Present: Barbara Ciampa, Co-Chair- Helen Cravis, Co-Chair Roz Gittleman; Steve
Kelly- Nancy Freed, Director, Social Services Department; Steve Baran,
Human Services Coordinator
Absent: Khalil Khatri; Christine Yedica
Minutes of 4/26: accepted.
Nancy Freed resignation: Nancy leaving to accept position as Facility Specialist with
Magellan, a mental health insurance agency
Transition Team: Nancy announced that a Transition Team will take over her duties after
her departure on the 9'h Steve Baran suggested that Committee invite Donna Hooper to
their next meeting since her responsibility on the team will relate in part to the Human
Services Committee.
Clark Cowen resignation: Nancy also announced that Clark Cowen was stepping down
as Chair of the Council on Aging board to be succeeded by Jacquie Davison.
Photograph of Human Services Committee: Barbara will make arrangements with David
Tabeling to photograph members of Human Services Committee during June for Town's
Annual Report.
Membership: Eva Glick's resignation due to illness was noted with regret. This leaves
two places to be filled on the committee. The following will be approached either to serve
directly or because they can suggest someone to serve—Steve Baran to approach Amy
Yang, social worker Social Services Department; Roz Gittleman to approach Erna
Greene; Helen Cravis to approach Alan Millner Barbara Ciampa to approach members
of the Welcoming Committee, First Parish Church.
Liaison reports:
Council on Aging:A new Town Siting Committee has been constituted to move forward
with planning for a new Senior Center It will begin by visiting a number of senior
centers, and in six months will recommend a new site. This is part of a political process
to help make the community a part of the planning. To the same end, another
committee, organized by the Senior Center itself has been working on the organization
of space in the new building.
The Senior Health Monitor program sponsored a party in which 27 recipients of services
participated.
Discovery Day/DVRT Helen Cravis reported on successful representation during
Discovery Day May 20, of the Domestic Violence and Response Team with a display of
balloons with the insignia Keep Lexington Safe and Healthy

LexFest! Barbara noted that LexFest! was held on the same day as Discovery Day with
a seeming disconnect between the two events so that the Discovery Day crowd didn't
necessarily get to the LexFest! event. Steve Baran said this would be discussed in a
wrap up meeting to be held soon.
Youth services: RePlace is writing a proposal to expand its youth groups at Avalon. The
Avalon management has been donating space for the program. Steve Kelly volunteered
to participate with Helen Cravis on this committee.
Services to the Developmentally Disabled: Roz Gittleman volunteered to act as liaison in
this area.
Early Childhood: Barbara Ciampa reported that a preschool scholarship was still
available and that there had been an increase in the eligibility level for family day care.
Gay/Lesbian: Barbara will seek to recruit a member from the First Parish Church
Welcoming Committee to both join the Human Services Committee and then act as
liaison to this group.
Million Mothers March: Helen Cravis and Cathy Abbott had gone to Washington to
participate, found the experience exhilarating. Barbara Ciampa shared her recollections
of being in Washington for Martin Luther King Jr's I Have a Dream speech.
Speakers for next year Barbara Ciampa will recruit a speaker from the Central
Middlesex Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally III while Steve Baran will
( contact the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council.
CORI. There was considerable interest in criminal check (CORI) procedures. Steve Kelly
explained how the original goals for CORI had been subverted over the years.
Fall party Barbara Ciampa volunteered her home for this event to take place in the fall
when there is a full complement of members.
