Minutes of 10/7/98
The Minutes of 10/7/98 were revised to indicate who was present and who was
absent. See attached.
Liaisons
List of liaison responsibilities was reviewed and revised. See attachment.
Preschool Scholarships — report by Barbara Ciampa
1 Funding sources for preschool scholarships had been identified in an
earlier meeting with Barbara Ciampa, Dan Fenn and David Williams.
These included: Special Ed, Community Partnerships/Communities
United, the preschools themselves, Harrington Fund, Genesis Fund, and
Preschool PTA.
2. It was agreed that there needed to be systematic criteria to evaluate who
was eligible for scholarships.
3. A large number of families with working parents are on the waiting list for
Communities United funding and a proposal for supplementary funding
has recently been submitted.
4 Nancy Bartlett agreed to serve as liaison to the preschool directors and
attend the early childhood meetings. Barbara Ciampa planned to contact
the Preschool PTA for an update on their criteria.
Health PAC — reported by Steve Baran
1 A paid Health Coordinator subsidized by tobacco funds keeps the program
on track.
2. Health PAC is made up of health-oriented teachers, physicians and other
public health oriented providers from the community including RePlace
and the Police Dept.
3. There is a coordinator of health curriculum in the elementary schools

4 Media projects include positive body image and self esteem at the 4th
( grade, Fiske, and middle school media with a grant from the Lexington
Education Foundation.
5. A student health council has 30 kids working on the theme "you don't have
to smoke to be cool."
6. Alcohol compliance checks are being operated by the Police Dept.
7 24-hour Relay Challenge —preventive orientation — companionship —
healthy use of leisure time — needs more adult participation in the planning
stages and overnight.
8. Grants include case management diversion project serving 30 kids who
are predelinquent with parent evening forms; gay lesbian; larceny crime
analysis; peer mediation.
9 Khalil Khatri agreed to serve as a liaison along with Gregory Kotonias-
Payne.
RePlace — report by Nancy Freed and Steve Baran
1 RePlace will no longer have space after June. They are looking for space.
It was agreed they should be invited to the next meeting to give a report
on their program and search for space.
2. Intergenerational space planning is underway through a new ad hoc
committee. The DPW barn was identified as a possible site for senior and
youth programs.
LexFest!
1 Planning is underway for the fourth year of LexFest!
2. Barbara Ciampa is considering taking a coordinating role with Leona
Martin. Meetings are underway
Committee Gathering
The Committee looks to Roz Gittleman to help organize a get together of present
and former committee members.
