Minutes of meeting of 11/5/97
Barbara. Eva, Rick and Steve reported on meeting of the school-department-convened by the Early
Education Committee. The committee met with Jay Kaufman, State Representative, to urge him to widen
eligibility requirements for child care funding. At the meeting, the problem of young children being left off
by their parents before school was officially open was discussed.
Barbara Ciampa reported on her attendance as a Lexington representative at the Mass. Volunteer Summit.
There was a discussion of how Lexington might participate in the future.
Nancy Freed provided an update of recent accomplishments of the Lexington Council on Aging. A number
of new programs were being undertaken including the Friend to Friend program with volunteers running
errands for the elderly
Rick Safford reported on a Community Leadership Award from Minuteman Home Care to Bob Harris for
his lifetime efforts on behalf of people with disabilities.
Steve will redraft the Committee's policy statement in light of input from committee members.
There was a discussion of whether the Committee should submit a warrant article. Linda and Lauren agreed
to investigate how to conduct a short survey of preschool need.
Steve submitted an approach to conducting a needs assessment through focus groups and will mail to
committee members the most recent needs assessment completed by the Human Services Committee.
Lauren and Roz agreed to participate on a needs assessment subcommittee pertaining to youth (elementary
middle and high school) while Eva and Barbara agreed to further investigate preschool need.
Barbara volunteered to organize a pot luck supper in honor of committee members who have resigned—
Julie and Jolley Anne.
