HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-08-04-HSC-min.pdf r-- Human Services Committee Minutes August 4, 1993 Present Donna M Hooper, Chairman; Ann W Irving; Jean Luongo, Human Services Committee candidate; Gerri Weathers, Chairman, Fair Housing Committee; Reuben Cornejo, Exchange Student from Mexico; Steve Baran, Human Services Coordinator Absent Eva S Glick; Eva Havas; Ruthie Liberman; Richard W Safford Minutes of 6/23/93 The Minutes of the meeting of 6/23/93 (see attached) were reviewed and corrected with final acceptance deferred until such time as there shall be a quorum Gerri Weathers Pair Housing and Met State Gerri Weathers, Chairman, Lexington Fair Housing Committee, asked for and received the support of those present for the concept of fair housing at the Met State properties Fair housing, this instance, applies to low and moderate income families, minorities, large families, the disabled, the elderly and Town { employees Gerri indicated • 65/300 acres available for housing • Fair Housing Committee recommending between 200-500 units to be shared with Arlington and Belmont Final approval of support for Fair Housing Committee statement (see attached) until such time as there shall be a quorum Human Services Fund Steve reported on aspects of the Human Services Fund Highlights were • Trustee transfers to the Fund by year 8/23/90 (date of inception) to 6/30/91 $5,250 7/1/91 to 6/30/92 6, 600 7/1/92 to 6/30/93 4, 300 • Income from individuals and groups by year 8/23/90 to 6/30/91 959 77 7/1/91 to 6/30/92 6, 895 74 7/1/92 to 6/30/93 4, 048 08 Minutes, Human Services Committee Page 2 • Expenditures by year 8/23/90 to 6/30/91 6, 190 08 7/1/91 to 6/30/92 7 , 027 02 7/1/92 to 6/30/93 7, 001 80 Contributions to the Endowment Fund (separate from income from individuals and groups) since the inception of the Fund total $4 , 625 Human services contracts RePlace contract has been held up since dollar amount of contract was off by $40 and contract had to be revised /Steve advised Bill Blout to consider savings in view of their expected deficit by • cutting back on amount of clinician's time being devoted to peer counseling program (cost is $18 , 600) and having volunteers trained to support the peer counselors; ( • cutting back on overhead by asking Community Human Services to assume bookkeeping and other administrative tasks Resource Information Steve Baran mentioned that he was looking into getting a modem that would make it possible for him to link into Cary Library which keeps an updated file on human services resources He has prepared a listing of human service publications available in his office The Human Services Committee report on demographics, based on the U S Census, will be added, when completed, to the listing Report on U S Census The draft report on the U S Census will be discussed by the Human Services Committee during a meeting it will hold on September 15th to which Leo McSweeney will be invited Youth Survey Donna Hooper said that the Committee would be proceeding to carry out the Youth Survey Its findings would serve as input into the Town's strategic planning effort This will be discussed at the Committee's September 15th meeting { Minutes, Human Services Committee S lin Page 3 Subcommittee Reports Disabilities In Rick Safford' s absence, Steve noted highlights related to activities of the Enablement Committee Council on Aging Donna Hooper reported that Bob Cushman was the new President of the Council on Aging Human Services Fund Brochure Steve noted that the Clarke School was interested in conducting community service projects He will contact them to see if they might have an interest in distributing the Human Services brochure as a project
