HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-09-10-HSC-min.pdf Human Services Committee Minutes, 9/ 10/90 Present Renee Cochin and Bob Cushman, Co-Chairmen; Ann Irving; Seymour Mandel ; Dennis Murakami ; Steve Baran, Human Services Coordinator Minutes 8/6/90 The Minutes of 8/6/90 were corrected to include Hayden among those programs which would participate in a review of special needs recreation as part of the Committee' s action plan Report of Human Services Coordinator Steve reported on the following developments a The Trustees of Public Trusts have voted to set up a Lexington Human Services Fund to be administered by the Human Services Coordinator The initial amount allocated to the fund is $5, 000 David Williams of the Trustees would like to meet with the Human Services Committee to discuss fundraising initiatives that would replace funds allocated by the Trustees b Steve visited Friends Together, new clubhouse for the mentally ill located at 186 Bedford Street 40 chronically mentally ill adults are served on an average daily Bob Cushman suggested that they be put in touch with CMARC to get technical assistance on how to operate their Transitional Employment Program c Steve is seeking support from Lexington' s children' s agencies on behalf of requesting a proclamation for U S ratification of the U N Rights of the Child d A letter from Sister Auger of the Grey Nuns was read requesting Steve' s support of their planning for an adult day health center Since the letter was requesting support from agencies that actually refer elderly people for this service, the Committee suggested that Steve refer Sister Auger to the Council on Aging e The Lexington Citizens for Special Needs is seeking to place adult children with special needs in a community residence to be constructed at the corner of Waltham Street and Park Drive A letter of intent is being filed with LexHab Seymour Mandel suggested approaching This Old House for the donated construction of a community residence Human Services Committee Minutes, 9/ 10/90 2 Liaison to RePlace Ann Irving volunteered to act as a liaison to RePlace and will attend Board meetings on an occasional basis Interviews of Candidates for the Human Services Committee Jack Sarmanian and Barbara Levine, candidates for membership on the Human Services Committee, met with the Committee Jack is an advocate for systems integration and is interested in finding ways of bringing federal and private funding to Lexington human services Barbara Levine has brought up her family in Lexington, recently received a Master' s degree in social work from Boston University She was interested in innovative programming such as bringing the elderly together with those of high school age through the SPANS program, saw a need for more affordable housing and wanted to know more about the implications of cuts in Town appropriations to human services Time of Committee Meeting It was agreed to meet henceforth on alternate Wednesday evenings with meetings starting at 7 30 p m This will make it possible to meet with the Selectmen and Town Manager The Committee accepted Renee' s suggestion that it meet with Rick White so that he might instruct Committee members about how the budget process works and provide an overview of how the Town might be dealing with the problem of shrinking resources The meeting schedule will make it possible to give Leo McSweeney, Selectman liaison, more information than has been possible in the past Respectfully submitted, JAI I1,� TSTh Stephen Baran, Human Services Coordinator
