April 9 , 1987
Present Sheila Martin, Seymour Mandel, Leonora Feeney, Jan Eustis,
Sylvia Perlman, Harvey Lowell, and Steve Baran
1 The Minutes were approved
2 The Coordinator reported on planning for a life skills curriculum
for the Lexington public school system There seemed to be
a discrepancy between the statement of philosophy calling for
broad community participation in the life skills learning process
and actual implementation either in planning or in teaching
Sheila, Seymour and Sylvia indicated an interest in participating
in the Planning Advisory Committee
A " Challenge Grant" RFP has been received from the Executive
Office of Communities and Development, Mass Housing Partnership
Challenge Grant Program There is the possibility of submitting
a proposal for a feasibility study of Bob Cushman' s equity
sharing concept and a forum in which ideas could be shared
for dealing with the rental housing issue
3 The Youth Committee has been discussing two sets of interrelated
themes the first deals with youth use of leisure time as expressed
in repeated instances of attempts to create a teen center in
Lexington; the second in health education and counseling as
might be advanced through a clinic program
It was felt that the recreation concept might be a matter to
pursue since there was potentially a broad base of support
for recreational projects which the Human Services Committee
might considefrom the point of view of parent participation
Its relation to drug and alcohol abuse could be another theme
4 Health and social services utilization by frail elderly as
reported by one of the Minuteman Home Care Corporation ' s
case managers was reviewed briefly There seemed to be a
minority of frail elderly receiving visiting nursing services
who were also receiving case management, and this raised an
interesting question as to a possible need for better case
coordination for the frail elderly population
Seymour had accompanied the nurse doing health monitoring
and was quite favorably impressed by her caring and her technical
capability He was less impressed by the quality of the living
conditions at Greeley Village The apartments seemed too small
and crowded to the point of presenting potential fire hazards
Respectfully submitted,
