HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-04-09-HSC-min.pdf Human Services Committee Minutes April 9 , 1987 Present Sheila Martin, Seymour Mandel, Leonora Feeney, Jan Eustis, Sylvia Perlman, Harvey Lowell, and Steve Baran 1 The Minutes were approved 2 The Coordinator reported on planning for a life skills curriculum for the Lexington public school system There seemed to be a discrepancy between the statement of philosophy calling for broad community participation in the life skills learning process and actual implementation either in planning or in teaching Sheila, Seymour and Sylvia indicated an interest in participating in the Planning Advisory Committee A " Challenge Grant" RFP has been received from the Executive Office of Communities and Development, Mass Housing Partnership Challenge Grant Program There is the possibility of submitting a proposal for a feasibility study of Bob Cushman' s equity sharing concept and a forum in which ideas could be shared for dealing with the rental housing issue 3 The Youth Committee has been discussing two sets of interrelated themes the first deals with youth use of leisure time as expressed in repeated instances of attempts to create a teen center in Lexington; the second in health education and counseling as might be advanced through a clinic program It was felt that the recreation concept might be a matter to pursue since there was potentially a broad base of support for recreational projects which the Human Services Committee might considefrom the point of view of parent participation Its relation to drug and alcohol abuse could be another theme 4 Health and social services utilization by frail elderly as reported by one of the Minuteman Home Care Corporation ' s case managers was reviewed briefly There seemed to be a minority of frail elderly receiving visiting nursing services who were also receiving case management, and this raised an interesting question as to a possible need for better case coordination for the frail elderly population Seymour had accompanied the nurse doing health monitoring and was quite favorably impressed by her caring and her technical capability He was less impressed by the quality of the living conditions at Greeley Village The apartments seemed too small and crowded to the point of presenting potential fire hazards Respectfully submitted, ni A I 6--Li Stephen Baran, Human Services Coordinato
