on May 14 at 7 pm at Keilty Hall $2 00
Committee members were invited to the Mystic Valley annual dinner on
Wednesday May 26 at 6 30 pm at the VFW Hall, $6 25
Youth
Judy and Roberta reported on their visit to RePlace/Youth Commission joint meeting
Bea had also attended Judy and Roberta left with an uncertaintly of where this would
go next, and a feeling that the Youth Commission was unfocused as to its direction Bea
was enthusiastic about the idea of a Youth Awareness week and will have an intern who
could help coordinate it, if the Youth Commission wanted to sponsor Ilene urged that
it be further expanded into Family Awareness Week
Bea had envisioned a series of small group discussions to help parents with limit setting
and to give them some mutual support at the same time as listening to kids views on how
late their curfews should be =or how much money they needed Also this would be an
opportunity for the Youth Commission to discover areas that needed change, such as the
hours the lights are on at the ball field Judy was concerned that Bea saw too much
homogeneity in the Town, and the facilitators would have to be very careful not to give
the impression there was a "right" way
Council on Aging
Howard visited the CoA last week, to discuss the providers council ideas Joan Melcher
already is part of a group of elderly providers that meets regularly, including Minuteman
Home Care, Symmes, Mystic Valley and CoA committees to discuss clients and programs
Additionallly the local area CoA coordinators get together from time to time Joan told
him that the High School will be offering credit for a friendly visitor training program,
and she suggested using kids for odd jobs, or a spaghetti dinner as a fund raising idea
for RePlace She would be happy to get to know other agencies better, especially inter-
generational
Providers Council
The first providers council meeting was scheduled for breakfast on Tuesday, June 8 at
7 30 am in the Selectmen's meeting room. Nancy volunteered to be incharge of refreshments
Ilene had spoken with Jane Tapia of the VNA who was enthusiastic about the council idea, as
had been Mystic Valley and RePlace The committee agreed that a focus was needed, and
decided that the first meeting would be for introductions and discussing goals of the
council Roberta suggested that that group could plan for Awareness week Tom pointed
out that there a various levels agencies, civic and community groups (eg LWV, Lions, Churches)
and very informal support groups, such as bridge clubs We will start with the first
group, and Ilene suggested asking them what kind of coordination they wanted Judy felt
that one important goal would be to encourage working together rather than competing for
shrinking dollars Steve pointed out that one of the things these discussions could
lead to would be the development of a new program, despite shrinking dollars
Howard mentioned that most of the agencies have both boards and staff; which did we
invite? We decided to start with staff of the more formal agencies that are primary
providers within Lexington, although their headquarters may not be located in town
We woudl ask them to come prepared to make a two minute presentation to the rest of
the group and to bring literature
Bea will rewrite the letter of invitation, and suggest bringing or mailing their
responses to the questionnaire, which will be discussed at the first meeting Nancy
and Bea will decide the guest list, after receiving some suggestions from other
committee members
Bea reported that Marcia Feakes had called requesting joint sponsorship of a meeting on
health block grants, with the League and the Health Department That might be a topic
for the second providers council meeting
Mystic Valley Hours
The Board of Appeals has not yet received the request from Mystic Valley regarding an
extension of their special permit for extended hours The Committee tabled discussion
pending the application
Next Meeting May 18, 1982 room 201, 7 30 pm
