Minutes of the Meeting of April 20, 1982
Present Steve Baran, Howard Reynolds, Ruth Nablo, Nancy Zarle, Tom Zarle, Judy
Zabin, Ilene White, Roberta Black, also Bea Phear
Minutes of the meeting of March 29 were approved as mailed
Youth Commission
Bea reported that she had tentatively scheduled May 4 for a ioint meeting with the
Youth Commission The committee felt that they were still unsure of how they wanted
to establish the context of meeting with other groups, and that it was still premature
since the brainstorming hadn't yet finished Roberta and Judy were invited by RePlace
to the joint meeting on April 27, which will be a start in clarifying expectations
Mystic Valley
Tom reported that Don Lund was back after an administrative leave They had a meeting
scheduled for April 21 and he planned to have finances on the agenda Roberta brought
a fundraising coupon that she had received from "Val-Pak" on Mystic Valley which she
felt was in bad taste Other members of the committee did not find it offensive, as
it is so hard to buy advertizing inexpensively Bea will find'out the current hours
of Mystic Valley in preparation for consideration of testifying at the hearing for extension
Brainstorming
The committee discussed Bea' s letter to Steve on planning issues The sense of the
committee was that they felt the need for some active focus and getting out into the
community more with an emphasis on communication Nancy pointed out that we had talked
about a legacy, and Steve mentioned the preventative focus and bringing in cable TV
Ludy emphasized that we need to appreciate what we have done as well , and could build
on that
It was suggested that we build on the sub committees and hold a series of workshops
that will get providers together as well as informal networks and interested citizens
A possibility would be to start with the concept of strengthening the family, a broad
rubric that could embrase elderly violence as well as youth summer problems The
purpose of the workshops include
coordination among providers
communication with the public
education of ourselves re needs and gaps
bringing together the informal networks
Ruth said it would be nice if the committee could have public monthly meetings around
a theme and then follow up with evaluation and recommendations, perhaps getting other
groups to run some of the topics, eg Youth Commission Bea felt that a subject/issue
woudl be a better focusing device than talking about a population
Tom felt it would be dangerous to bite off more than we can chew to include the public
at first, yid we should keep control if it were only providers, who would then he
receiving as well as giving
1
I;ene suggested that she would like to see providers here in the room to brainstorm
about how to best reach the public with information and to develop workshops
Judy suggested we invite them in to discuss the topic of our choice - families and summer
Ruth and Roberta felt we needed quite a lot of structure Tom suggested that the
sub committees discuss the ideas with agencies and then come back together at the
next meeting to put together a half dozen basic questions Nancy said we also need an
evaluation tool handed out at the meeting
The next meeting will continue this discussion and come to closure on what kind of
workshops we wish to have and what topics shoudl be addressed A target date will
be early June
Member resignation
Ruth announced that this was her last meeting and she was submitting her resignation
as a member of the Human Services Committee She reminded the group that she had
been appointed for only six months The committee tried to pursuade her to stay on,
and thanked her for her insights and contributions
