HomeMy WebLinkAbout1971-02-04-TCC-min.pdf TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE 435 February 4, 1971 PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Reed, Mr Lord, and Mrs Hall VISITORS Chief Marshal Edward W Turner, USA R Harvey Smith, Lions Club Neil Cronin, Chamber of Commerce PATRIOTS DAY Mr Cronin announced that the Chamber will again donate the trophies for the winning floats participating in our afternoon parade Mr Cronin is in charge of this function The Rotary Club will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast again this year The Lions Club will sponsor their annual five-mile road race on the morning of the 19th We have had acceptances from the following groups for our afternoon parade Gloucester High School ROTC Band, Girls Drill Team, Grenediers, $ Color Guard Wakefield Majorettes Linda's Rangerettes of Woburn We have been advised that the Boston University ROTC has been de-activated A letter from a Mr Fred Surrette of Lexington indicates he has a replica of the Follen Church which he would like to feature in a float for our parade We will be in communication with him when our Float Meeting date is set A letter from the I C Rockettes $ Comets, Inc , Salem, Massachusetts indicates their interest in our afternoon parade Mrs Litchfield will write to them asking for more details on their size, age-range, performance activity, etc She will also write to the Westminster Elementary School and ask for more information on their colonial-style Band and Fife Corps, which wishes to march with us The Committee is interested in having both groups participate Mrs Litchfield will invite the Linn Village Drum Band to march in our afternoon parade, as well as the Flying Redmen Drill Team from the University of Massachusetts A letter from Mr and Mrs Donovan was read suggesting we delete any reference to the military from our parade Mrs Donovan met with the committee last year on this same matter Mr Barnes will draft a letter from the Committee, to be finalized at our next week's meeting, reminding the Donovans that the Committee tries diligently to produce a well-rounded parade encompassing not only the military, but also civic, youth, historical and entertaining organizations Mr Lord suggested on the matter of combining the second and fourth divisions, or even doing away with the second division (veterans division) , that it is important not to delete any division of our five-divisioned parade, since we are building toward the big parade in 1975 If we had half decent weather on Patriots Day, it was felt the veterans would turn out in far greater numbers for their second division All Committee members and our Chief Marshal agreed with Mr Lord to retain that second division, bolstering it as needed each year IAt next week's meeting, we will host Lexington's Youth and Veterans groups at 7 30 PM in the Bird Room, Cary Memorial Hall , February II , 1971 Respectfully submitted, Marilyn L Hall , Recording Secretary
