January 28, 1971
PRESENT Ralph Lord, Acting Chairman; Mrs Litchfield; Mrs Reed; and
Mr Fenske it
VISITORS Past Chief Marshals Zeoli , Brenchick, and Wyman `
PATRIOTS DAY
Mr Lord asked for suggestions or criticisms from the Past Chief Marshals
On the matter of combining the 2nd and 4th divisions of our afternoon parade,
the Marshals felt the 2nd division, containing veterans' organizations,
should combine with the 1st division, and be placed at the end of the 1st
division That would make the Centennial Legion the 2nd division; the third
division would be the civic organizations; and the last, or 4th division,
would host the fire companies This plan seemed a good solution to those
present
The Marshals agreed it would not be feasible to ask our invited guests to march
in the afternoon parade It is a long route, and there could be some feelings
among our guests if some marched, while others rode The Marshals felt that
transporting our guests makes for a smoother parade overall
Each year, it becomes more difficult to obtain convertibles for these guests
It was suggested we use hard tops, or possibly National Guard cars or jeeps
to take the place of convertibles
The Marshals agreed our parade communications system was fine They also felt 1 ,
there was no need to change our antique car pattern at the end of the civic
division They would like to have the bands play more music in Lexington Center,
and suggested signs be appropriately placed as a reminder to all bandleaders
It was also suggested that at the end of the 1st division, it might be appropriate
to mass all the veterans' colors, thereby making a much stronger showing In the
past few years, the veterans' organizations have not been very numerous The
massing of their colors might solidify their numbers into a better showing
We have had acceptances for our parade participation from the National Guard,
and the Fitchburg, Reading, and Woburn High School bands
A letter was read from the Westminster Elementary School Music Department
relative to their possible participation in our afternoon parade They would
be in colonial costumes We will reply to their letter at our next meeting
The members/representatives of Lexington's civic organizations will meet with
our committee next Thursday at 7 30 PM in the Bird Room for parade planning and
participation
Respectfully submitted,
