HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970-05-07-TCC-min.pdf 420 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE May 7, 1970 PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Mr Gaughan, Mrs Litchfield, Mr Lord, Mr Broderick, Mrs Reed, Mr Fenske and Mrs Hall MEMORIAL DAY - MAY 25, Q.970 Mr Barnes will call Mr Graham of the American Legion for the names of the Chief Marshal and his staff Rev Handley will be our Speaker of the Day Mr Stone will be our bugler for the day Mr Lord will ask Mr Gillespie of the High School Band for a bugler to play the echo He will also check on the name of the High School Student who will deliver the Gettysburg Address Mrs Reed will call Mrs Bacon for the names of the four wreath bearers from the Lexington Girl Scouts The Hayden Twirlers and Hayden Juniors will be marching in our parade, as will the High School Band The parade will re-form on the Green following ceremonies there and re- march to Cary Memorial Hall for review and dismissal Mrs Litchfield will ask Rev Mclninch to again read Gen Logan's ORDERS OF THE DAY as he did last year She will arrange for various Lexington clergymen to •deliver prayers at the various parade stops, at Westview, and on the Green She will call Mr Saunders of the Lexington Minute Men and ask that they arrange for and make up a firing squad for Westview and the various stops along the parade route and on the Green This squad will be asked to be available for the entire day PATRIOTS DAY The committee discussed having the Lexington Minute Men lead our parades on future Patriots Days Our consideration would be influenced by their par- ticipation in Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades and feastivities It was suggested we have only two or three convertibles in the afternoon parade for dignitaries The committee prefers to march as a group It was suggested we give the military a choice of being driven directly to the reviewing stand for parade review from the luncheon - or marching if they so preferred It was suggested we ask the British Consul for a military escort in uniform to accompany Her Majesty's Consul This would be both colorful and impressive The committee discussed the High School Band's lack of participation in in- clement weather at length Mr Broderick suggested the committee write to Mr Gillespie and ask that he meet with the committee, at his convenience, to discuss the possibility of "weather-proofing" the band uniforms and instruments Mr Fenske will talk with Mr Gillespie on a personal basis offering the committee's help in solving the inclement weather/marching problem, rather than the committee's writing the aforementioned letter We received a thank-you letter from General Briggs All bills presented at this meeting were approved for payment We will meet next Thursday, May 14th, at 8 PM in the Selectmen's Office Respectfully submitted, Marilyn L Hall , Recording Secretary
