HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970-02-26-TCC-min.pdf TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE " February 26, 1970 PRESENT Vice Chmn Gaughan, Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Reed, Mr Lord, Mr Broderick, Mr Fenske, and Mrs Hall VISITORS Francis B McNamara, Jr , Chief Marshal ; Edward Turner, Chief of Staff; Ellison Beckwith, Historical Society; Neil Cronin, Chamber of Commerce; Paul Nichols, & Steve Koon, & Marc Reyome, & Jerry Stokes, Battle Green Demolay; Sue Arana and Peter Grossimon, The Attic; George Cooper, Boy Scouts; Don White, Republican Town Committee; Warren P Hill , Teen-Age Republican Club; Peter Eleftharakis, Sue Eleftherakis, Rick Burbidge, and Steve Stacey, Youth Activities Club at St Brigid's Church; Barbara Schmickley, Lexington Newcomers Club; Bernie Belcastro and George Bullock, Lexington Lions Club; Samuel Augustine and Anthony Moretti , Lexington Sons of Italy; Mrs Swenson and Mrs Belt, Girl Scouts Mr Gaughan opened the meeting with a warm welcome to our visitors He introduced Mr Beckwith who, in turn, went over his plans for the antique cars in the 4th division He is also in charge of the antique fire engine, property of the Historical Society Mr Gaughan then turned the meeting over to Mr Fenske, and the latter went over all facets of entering a float in the afternoon parade He stressed the fact that the judging of the floats would be based on ( I ) compliance with the parade theme (OUR HERITAGE - OUR RESPONSIBILITY) ; (2) imagination; (3) workmanship Mr Cronin announced the judges to be Mr Dolan, an Art Teacher at the High School , Rev Handley, and one of the Selectmen He announced the three categories to be judged: Civic, Commercial , and Youth The Chamber of Commerce donates a lovely trophy for each category Several points were stressed to our visitors ( I ) The float application deadline is no later than March 26th (2) It was suggested that people be on the floats to drama- tize, live, our heritage (3) The committee needs to know in advance if people will be marching along with their float (4) Floats should be lined up in East Lexington at II 30 am on April 20th (5) Live animals are restricted from the parade to haul floats, etc (6) Float builders should check into insurance (one day policy) (7) Float applicants submit to the judges one short paragraph describing their expression of the parade theme (8) The float driver should have clear vision from the vehicle he is driving (9) If a float breaks down, pull it over to the side of the road If the breakdown is temporary, come back into the parade, preferably at the end of a division ( 10) Floats should be properly identified with a sign on either side of it ( II ) The Newcomers Club asked about decorated cars in the parade, and were told they were not allowed They were told about the films on hand at the Library and it was suggested they get an idea of our parade from these films Mr Gaughan will instruct Mr Beckwith not to have any young children on the antique fire engine He will also suggest that the adults on the engine be in costume of some kind pertinent to the engine's era Mrs Litchfield will inform the Girl Scouts that we approved of the 9 cadet scouts from Southboro marching with the Lexington scouts in the Sunrise Parade and under the Lexington Girl Scout banner Also, the committee voted to pay Linn Village Drum Band $150 00 and invite Holy Family Defenders Band to come for $100 00 She will type a master list by March 12th of all band and marching unitiacceptances Respectfully submitted, Marilyn L Hall Recording Secretary
